Filet crocheted camisole made by Alice E Cleland (1864-1938) Middletown, Dauphin Co, PA, USA for her own use. The filet crochet contains a Greek Key design, bordered by mesh lace and scallops. The camisole itself is of soft cotton. The edges are held together with drawstring ties, and there are drawstrings around the armholes for a "better" fit. Honestly, I never thought I would inherit my great grandmother's underwear.

Description
An account of the resource

Materials: Shetland-style, American-made 100% wool yarn, fingering weight, brand currently unknown. The pink tweed may have been an early Rowan yarn. Silver Mercury dime buttons with shank, ¾”.

Story: In 1991, I knitted this vest for my boyfriend, now husband of 28 years. It was a challenging project, with more colors and more finishing details than I had previously undertaken. Starting in late summer, I knitted along diligently, but was sick during the holidays and couldn’t complete the vest before we exchanged holiday gifts. Nevertheless, like so many of us have done and still do, I boxed and wrapped the unfinished pieces carefully, eagerly anticipating his response. On opening his vest-to-be, my boyfriend made a number of nice, thoughtful comments, but he was much less enthusiastic than I had hoped.

I handed it to him a few weeks later, finished, and his face lit up: “It’s done? I can have it?” When I mentioned my concern that he didn't like it, he said, “Well, I’ve gotten a few knitted things in pieces over the years, and usually, after I open them, I never see them again, so I find it’s best not to get too excited about unfinished projects!”

Design History: UK designer Sasha Kagan, (https://www.sashakagan.co.uk), created the vest pattern and published it in an early booklet of Rowan sweater designs that I cannot now locate. Sasha Kagan described this same design, called “Leaves,” as “based on a Fair Isle pattern” on pp. 81-82 of The Sasha Kagan Sweater Book: 48 Beautiful Handknits by a Top Fashion Designer, published in 1984 by Ballantine Books, New York, ISBN #0-345-31871-4.

The instructions specified using the intarsia technique for the colorwork, with the back and two fronts knitted separately and later seamed at the sides. The horizontal stripes were straightforward enough to knit this way, but I knit the hundreds of little leaves with separate strands for each, tying each one off at both the beginning and the end, a process that would have been made easier by using the stranded colorwork techniques typical of traditional Shetland and Fair Isle knitting.

In the 1990s, colorful sweater designs were very popular, however, most designers and pattern publishers recommended using intarsia even when stranded knitting would be faster and more convenient because most kntters were not familiar with "knitting in the round" and "steeking the openings," two essential elements of traditional stranded knitting. Today, knitters are much more familiar with the history and techniques of stranded knitting. This shift occurred later in the 1990s as designers like Alice Starmore, Ron Schweitzer, and still later, Kate Davies, among others, as well as yarn designers and manufacturers like Jamieson & Smith of Shetland, and Betty Lindsay and Bonnie Hassler of Yarns International in Bethesda, Maryland helped to popularize these traditional materials and techniques.

Notes: This project reminds me how love inspires so many of our most creative and adventurous feats in handwork and in life!

Description
An account of the resource

This is a man's vest made by Anna Bell Bray of Shetland, UK for my husband, Wade Lindsay, in late 1997 or early 1998. The vest is made of Jamieson and Smith Jumper Weight wool yarn in a combination of 11 dyed natural colors, solid colors, and tweeds in the traditional manner -- knitted from the bottom up, in the round, using no more than 2 colors per round. The V-neck and armholes are steeked and cut, with the edgings picked up and knitted after cutting. Anna Bell Bray typically knitted her garments using a traditional knitting belt and 5 long steel needles.

During a visit to Shetland in July 1997 with my mother-in-law, Betty Lindsay and father-in-law Joe Lindsay, we met Anna Bell Bray at the Islesburgh Exhibition, where she and a group of accomplished knitters and designers from the area exhibited and sold their work. As I've written elsewhere, Anna Bell Bray’s work is distinguished by couturier details that are difficult to achieve in knitwear made using traditional Shetland knitting techniques. She agreed to knit a vest for my husband -- to be sent to us whenever it was completed -- sizing him on the spot just by looking at him. We knew whatever she created would be amazing, and so it is.

The photos show many views of the vest, and capture Anna Bell Bray's masterful use of light and dark values and large Norwegian-style star motifs to achieve an almost kaleidoscopic visual effect. An unusual ribbing with checkerboard detail adds distinction. As shown in the inside-out photo, the neck ribbing reveals a patterned facing, while the hem and armholes have plain facings. These facings give the garment a more finished look by enclosing the raw edges, and allow it to better hold its shape. The facings also reduce the chance of excessive wear at these common stress points.

The subtle gradations in the colors, and their placement, serve to keep the eye moving over the design so that it always looks fresh and interesting. For example, one brown used in the ribbing is not used in the main body of the sweater, while the tweed yarns are used sparingly to point up the centers of the motifs.

An account of the resource

This lovely creation was made for me by my beloved grandmother and cherished friend, Helen Rudewicz Pawlak Horan. It is an absolute honor to have received this tremendous gift from such a beautiful person in my life. When I'm wearing it, wrapped in all its feathery weightlessness and gentle warmth, I feel as though I am embaced in her comforting spirit.

I remember her working on it for a long time, taking great care and attention, being challenged by the fine and fuzzy mohair yarn, and loving the accomplishment of seeing her work take shape. We would sit together and talk while she knit. I also feel like so many of the stories and wisdoms she shared are captured in her stitches.

My grandmother - "Chuchee" as we all called her - was also a fan of watching the game show Wheel of Fortune. She liked to solve the puzzles and adored the glamour and grace of Vanna White. Some years after my grandmother had passed, I was wearing this piece at a knitting trade show when Vanna White approached me to admire it. She was delightful and her comments were so very complimentary. As we talked, I mentioned how much of a fan of hers that my grandmother had been and how parts of this garment were probably knit while watching Vanna as well. Without missing a beat, Vanna said, "Well then, this for your grandma..." and she pulled me up on stage and proceeded to do the famous Vanna presentation move - gracefully guiding her arm up and down to accentuate my grandmother's knitting. What a surprising and fun tribute.

Somehow the magic of knitted treasures is that they just keep on giving ... thank you Chuchee (and Vanna).

Description
An account of the resource
An accessory set comprised of pillbox style hat with hexagonal crown, fringed scarf, and mittens, ca. 1998. Designed and knitted by Anna Bell Bray, a noted creator of traditional Shetland garments. Purchased in Shetland, UK by Betty H. Lindsay for Jennifer Lindsay. Anna Bell Bray's work is distinguished by her painterly use of color and pattern, the interplay of dark and light values for maximum visual impact, and by the couturier details and finishes she gave to each garment. Her preference for knitting with pastel colors on dark backgrounds lends her work a distinctive, luminous quality. In this composition, pale peach stars dominate, while the darker diamond motifs recede against a network of tiny diamond patterns in the borders framing the center panel, and on the reverse sides of scarf and mittens. The star-patterned crown of the hat echoes the glowing star motifs. Since her death, Anna Bell Bray’s importance to the contemporary history of Shetland Knitting is honored annually at the Cunningsburgh Agricultural Society Show when the most promising knitter is awarded the Anna Bell Bray Prize for the best hand knitted Fair Isle Garment. Materials: 100% Shetland wool in 9 colors. Detailed Measurements: Hat: 20" x 4” x 6” Diameter (measured from point to point on star-shaped crown) 6" Height 4" Scarf: 48.25" x 6.5” (not including fringe) Fringe 3.75" Mittens: Mitten 1 (cuff matches hatband): Cuff: 2.25” x 3.5” Total (with folded cuff): 8.75” x 3.5” Thumb: 2.5” Mitten 2: Cuff: 2.5” x 3.5” Total (with folded cuff): 8 7/8” x 3.5” Thumb: 2.5” Note that Mitten 1 is slightly different from Mitten 2, and there are slight differences in the measurements for each. Scholarly Notes and Resources: Alice Starmore included a photo of one of Anna Bell Bray's Shetland sweaters in Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting, published by The Taunton Press, Newtown, CT, 1988. Starmore wrote on page 29, "Bearing testimony to the fact that the Oil Age has not entirely extinguished the genuine art of Fair Isle knitting, this 1986 sweater, designed by Annabel Bray, displays an elaborate use of border patterns, some of them asymmetrical.” Starmore further stated that Norwegian style patterns (like those favored by Anna Bell Bray), became popular in Shetland and Fair Isle knitting after World War II. Ibid at 26.

Description
An account of the resource
Cardigan designed and knitted by Anna Bell Bray, a noted creator of traditional Shetland garments. Mrs. Bray's work is distinguished by her extraordinary use of dark and light values for maximum visual impact, and by the couturier details and finishes she gave to each garment. This garment is unusual for its fashionably curved front, and dramatic, modern-looking garter stitch borders.
Mrs. Bray knitted using a traditional knitting belt and long, double-pointed steel knitting needles. She used 100% Shetland wool yarns. It is likely that the yarn she used to knit this sweater was "Shetland 2000."
Purchased and worn by Betty Lindsay, co-owner of Yarns International in Bethesda, Maryland. Mrs. Lindsay was instrumental in developing a line of naturally colored Shetland yarns in cooperation with Oliver Henry, Manager of the Jamieson and Smith Woolen Mills. Called "Shetland 2000,” the joint venture created an enduring market for the full range of colors naturally occurring in Shetland fleece, and helped to preserve the colorful and variegated characteristics of Shetland wool and Shetland sheep at a time when white fleece was preferred for overdyeing on an industrial scale.
The nine colors they co-developed and sold under the Yarns International label were Shetland White, Shetland Black, Mooskit, Sholmit, Moorit, Katmollet, Gaulmogit, Yuglet, and Shaela. This yarn is still available today from Jamieson and Smith under the name “Shetland Supreme Jumper Weight.”

I made this afghan back in 1966, at least started. I was working in delivery rooms at the time and a coworker had made one. She shared the pattern with several of us. I believe it was called Dutch tile. I don't recall we ever knew who designed the pattern. I made it out of wool purchased from Lee Wards. I made it for myself and it was used for years. The gold color faded some as it was thrown over the back of our couch.

Description
An account of the resource
This filet crochet item, possibly a banner, was made by Charles Etta Dunlap Thompson, with crochet cotton, probably in the 1920s. The letters IOOF stand for International Order of Odd Fellows. Suzie Robertson of the IOOF Sovereign Grand Lodge Headquarters in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, wrote in an email that local IOOF lodges are under the umbrella of the Sovereign Grand Lodge, however they come up with their own projects and events. Regarding Mrs. Thompson's IOOF crochet piece, Robertson wrote, "most likely it was a design chosen locally." According to family lore, Mrs. Thompson's husband, Cicero Taylor Thompson, Sr., was a member of the IOOF. In the 1920s and early '30s, the Thompson family lived in Dublin, Texas. The IOOF lodge in Dublin was No. 313. The banner's last known owner was Mrs. Thompson's grandson, Gary Lee Wade. Since his death in 2017, the banner's location is unknown.

Description
An account of the resource

Over the years, people who knew my love for knitting, crochet, and sewing entrusted me with related supplies they no longer needed, or those they inherited from loved ones and were unlikely to use.

When it came time to craft these holiday table mats, my received button collection came in handy. The plan was to use holiday-themed crochet applique to embellish a pair of shaggy felt rectangles.

I crocheted corrugated leaves, inspired by similar leaves in Irish Crochet lace. Crocheted with red yarn and arranged in a wide circle with stems pointing inward, the corrugated leaves made a pretty good approximation of a poinsettia flower. That was appropriate, because live poinsettia petals are specialized leaves. I tried adding crocheted green leaves, because poinsettias have those as well. No matter how I arranged them, they overwhelmed the red "petals." The piece needed green though, so I added green buttons, which probably came from the estate of one of my aunts.

A slightly altered, crocheted fern frond made a reasonable Christmas tree. My then five-year-old daughter Ella helped me choose the best red buttons to decorate the tree. Ella wanted to decorate her own tree mat, so we found a crocheted leaf, sewed it to a scrap of felt, and sewed button ornaments on it. Unfortunately, I could find only a very small photo of Ella's holiday mat.

The edges of the shaggy felt were wavy. Since the felt was synthetic, I was reluctant to press it with a hot iron. The edges needed a trim or something else to weigh them down and flatten them.

My sister-in-law's sister, Sharon, had worked in a fabric store and collected several half-gallon tubs of buttons. Sharon decided she would never use them all, so she passed them along to me. With a trove of buttons like hers, I could afford to be extravagant. I sewed a solid line of buttons just inside the edges of each holiday table mat. That flattened the edges.

I am grateful that people thought of me when they had sewing, knitting, and crochet supplies they didn't need. Naturally, I couldn't keep everything, so I passed along items I wouldn't use in a thoughtful and respectful way.

Description
An account of the resource

I designed this sweet crocheted picot heart in the 1980s, envisioning it as an applique motif to embellish handmade or purchased items.

I ran across it several times over the next 30-some years, but didn't crochet it again until 2017. Our daughters' piano teacher and our good friend remarried, and she and her new husband didn't need anything at all. I tucked a crocheted picot heart in a card for the couple, writing that I hoped they would think of the heart as a symbol of all the good things to come. "It was perfect!" my friend said.

In 2020, I needed to write a bunch of extra-special thank you notes. Crocheted hearts might be just what I needed to help me not just say, but show my gratitude.

One recipient was a life-long fan of The University of Texas at Austin, so he received a burnt orange picot heart. He also enjoyed iced tea, and I thought he might use his crocheted heart as a coaster. The yarn was Brown Sheep Company's Cotton Fleece, crocheted with a U. S. size H-8 (5mm) hook.

Friends who raised buffalo gave me a big box of buffalo fur and hair plucked from bushes, trees, and barbed wire fences. Their picot heart was crocheted with buffalo fur which I spun and plied with a hand spindle. The yarn was bulky and was crocheted with a U. S. size K-10.5 (6.5mm) hook.

What will people do with the crocheted hearts? Maybe they will add a piece of thread to hang the heart as an ornament, glue the heart into a scrapbook, or give it to their Valentine. Maybe they will just leave it lying around where they can see it from time to time, and let it remind them that their efforts were appreciated.

The red hearts are crocheted with No. 10 crochet cotton and a Susan Bates aluminum hook, U. S. steel size 4 (2mm). They are about 1.75 x 1.75 inches.

An account of the resource

"Sven & Helga" are hand knitted dolls created by Judith Lasch of Middletown, New Jersey, in the year 2000. Judith created the dolls for her daughter, Callie, following a trip they had shared together to the Scandinavian countries. Folkloric dolls were a staple in their home growing up and, as Callie and her sisters honed their own making skills, making their own dolls was further encouraged. Plans for the next doll to be shared as a surprise gift were made many months in advance. Sven & Helga were named in honor of Callie's father and grandmother.

My mother made this in the early 90’s and gave to me as a Christmas gift. I don’t know if it is chrocheted or just tied loosely. She is a very freely creative person of her own ideas, often playing with materials not following any teacher or textbook. Thus, I don’t know how to categorize this.

An account of the resource

My mother, Anna Wirth Thompson (1936- ) learned to knit, crochet, embroider, and sew in school in Germany, where she was born and grew up. She taught me to knit when I was seven years old. I was in Mrs. Stone's second grade class at Edgemere Elementary School in Plainview, Texas, at the time.

First, I knitted the yellow piece, which was about 5 inches wide at the start. As many beginning knitters do, I accidentally added stitches, so the width at my last row was 6.75 inches. The piece measured 4.75 inches from bottom to top. The yarn was probably wool.

I had watched my mother knit slipper socks for my father. They were blue with a wondrous stranded pattern in red. After the heel, she worked two sets of 2 x 2 stranded checks, for a total of four rounds. Then came a decorative diamond shaped pattern, and finally another 4 rounds of 2 x 2 checks.

"Mom, I want to knit checks," I told her. She gave me more wool, and told me how to knit checks. I offer written instructions, all these years later:

Row 1: *k 4, p 4;* rep from * across.

Rows 2-5 (or so): Knit the knits and purl the purls.

Row 6: Purl the knits and knit the purls.

Rows 7-10: Repeat Rows 2-5.

Following her spoken instructions, I created a (mostly) checkerboard pattern with textures. But, "Mom, I want to knit colors!" I said, thinking of the checks on the slipper socks she made.

She gave me multi-color yarn in the Fiesta colorway. I guess that satisfied me for a time. The finished piece was 5 to 6 inches wide and 10-ish inches from cast on to bind off.

My mom influenced the course of my life by teaching me how to knit. I am glad she did.
