Such tied quilts were used for various purposes like bedcovers, gifts for future brides, neighbors and sold to benefit the local church. Although both tying and quilting are varying ways to fasten the quilt's three layers, the North Country style for making bedcovers used the tying method. This was faster than quilting and permitted thicker batting (interlining). In addition, the materials that make up the quilt can come from different sources. Often made from recycled scraps of fabric, veteran knitters sometimes prefer used scraps over new ones as it allows for a diverse color pattern with much variety. Quilts like these helped to support local churches while keeping a folk arts tradition alive in the community. The Johnsburg United Methodist Women were very involved in the Folklife Center’s programing in the early years. They co-sponsored two Adirondack quilt & needlework shows where the Folklife Center showcased and documented locally-made quilts in the tied tradition at the Wevertown Town Hall in the late 1980s. They also participated in the early folklife festivals and the children’s workshop series, Growing Up in the North Country in the 1990s. This quilt, along with another, was purchased for the Folk Art & Artist Collection, and has been displayed in exhibitions at the Library and at other organizations.</text>
