He served in the US Navy before being employed by the Bloomington Lake Bank and Summit National Bank in St. Paul. Bruins eventually transferred to the Summit Bank in Richfield. After working as president of the Buena Vista National Bank in Denver, Colorado, Bruins returned to the Richfield Summit Bank as president and moved to Richfield with his wife and children. He was very active in the local community, particularly in the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and Optimist Club.
