<p>This piece is a crocheted mandala designed and made by textile artist Michelle Beerbower. It was made in 2025 as the commencing piece in her collection "Mandalas of Transformation". The artist used US crochet hook size I-9 and acrylic blend yarn. This piece was made as a tribute to my journey and continued story of healing and going from chaos to harmony. It tells the story of family, meaning, and the contributing factors of our journey on this earth and our artful expression. My grandmother sat with me patiently showing me how to use my own youthful hands to weave the loops and stitches with grace precision and great care. This mindfulness in motion creative endeavor weaves stories, prayers, and wishes into the fabric with each stitch. There is a remarkable significance in the cadence of creating a series of repetitive knots and turning them into beautiful treasures to adorn the body or the home. Creation with the hands awakens a deep awareness of the beauty and the value of “things” in our lives. But more than that, looping the yarn invites peace and a deeply spiritual story emerges with the collection of stitches. Taking the seemingly chaotic group of knots and transforming them into an artful item to behold is a transcendent experience. The significance of circles plays a key role in my collection. For instance, circles are representative of enlightenment, or they may represent the spirit. In indigenous cultures, circles are used for sweat lodges and drum circles and represent harmony, balance and treasured oneness with nature. Knots also carry a specific significance as they are used in prayer beads symbolizing the connection to the higher power. For me the repetitive knots create a quiet atmosphere to connect and for healing. For me Mandalas are significant in representing the transformation and healing from trauma and chaos to harmony and balance. My collection of mandalas of transformation are representative of a scar, seen, heard, validated and healed. Additional mandalas are currently being created to represent the intention to heal, to bring hope, to show support, to bring a splash of color or simply to be a whimsical reminder of our Divinity.</p>

<p>This is a beaded collar accessory designed to be worn over a sweater or top to dress it up. I made this to support and participate in CKC's Collar-Along Make-Along activity -- a make-along held in 2025 that was created to call attention to the beauty and utility of the vintage decorative knitted and crocheted collars featured in CKC's new Maria C. Vallejo Lace Collection, and other digital collections CKC offers access to for its online visitors. <br /><br />The collar is made from a pattern available for purchase on Ravelry, a social networking website for knitters and crocheters. The collar was designed by Sigrun Halla, and is called "Pearlfriend Collar," (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pearlfriend-collar). <br /><br />The yarn was given to me some years ago by Marilyn Huset, a fellow CKC Board member. It is "GalPaca Farm Mixed Fiber Sport Yarn" -- an Alpaca, Corriedale Wool, and Bamboo fiber blend -- in the color "Tsunami". Since the pattern is written for DK weight yarn, to make the collar a bit heftier, I held the sport weight yarn with a strand of Rowan Kid Silk Haze lace weight kid mohair yarn in a similar shade of blue green. The beads are an unknown mix of bronze and green metallic shades I had available. I ran out of these close to the end of the knitting, and had to find a few more beads to fill in. The beads add weight, elegance, and subtle sparkle to the collar. I modified the collar pattern to include a casing for the ribbon, which is recycled and repurposed gift ribbon. <br /><br />Since completing the collar, I have worn it a lot. Such accessories are experiencing a revival because they make it fast and easy to dress up a tee or sweater for a video conference call. Because of the yarns selected, and the fact that one yarn was a thoughtful gift from a longtime CKC colleague and friend, this collar feels like a warm and cozy hug whenever I wear it.</p>

<p>The Center for Knit and Crochet’s July 2021 newsletter, In the Loop, invited readers to join a “What’s Your Favorite Vintage?” make-along. My mind immediately went to the knitted Armadillo Wrap from Angela Jeffs’ book, Wild Knitting (1979). I had wanted to make that wrap since first seeing the book decades before. Wild Knitting was a formative book for me. The designs in the book confirmed two things: a person can knit all manner of garments and accessories, and knitted items can be fun and silly. Sally Kindberg’s illustrations added to the charm of Wild Knitting. Her drawing of the Armadillo Wrap was what inspired me to make it. Sally is on Instagram.com @skindbergia. She wrote about Wild Knitting in an October 26, 2018 post: “…The publishers biked dozens of knitted pattern samples for me to draw over a period of weeks. I’m not a knitter btw… A winter of several migraines I seem to remember” In a January 21, 2024 post, Sally wrote about how her small daughter was delighted by the bike messenger deliveries of knitted samples and finished projects. She ended by saying, “It was … a challenging commission.” So after all those years, I gathered wool and wool-blend yarns from stash for the Armadillo Wrap in August 2021. I knitted the small pieces by hand and the longer stockinette stitch pieces on the Ultimate Sweater Machine. By November the pieces were finished and the legs and tail were assembled. Then I hit a roadblock. The top of the head was bigger than the bottom of the head. I couldn’t quite figure out how to sew it together. Besides I wanted to change the ears’ position on the head to be more like ears on armadillos that live in my neighborhood. To add to my troubles, the knitted armadillo body and lining were not coming together the way I expected them to. The unfinished Armadillo Wrap went into a project bag to wait. I finally decided to get over myself and finish the Armadillo Wrap early in 2024. It went together more easily than anticipated.</p>

<p>Long-time CKC Board member and Treasurer Marilyn Huset shared a pair of crocheted bears to CKC’s Community Collection: Crocheted Teddy Bears http://digital.centerforknitandcrochet.org/items/show/28639</p>

<p>CKC’s Board of Directors was charmed by the bears and Marilyn’s story. Board members asked if she would write a crocheted bear pattern for CKC Members to download. Marilyn wrote instructions for the crocheted bear and also for a knitted version. In June 2023, CKC called for volunteers to test the patterns.</p>
<p></p>
<p>I volunteered to test the crochet pattern, and that’s how Pinky Bear came to be. Within weeks, knit and crochet patterns for Marilyn’s bears were available free of charge to CKC Members. To promote CKC’s free knit/crochet bear patterns, I posted Pinky Bear’s many Fall 2023 adventures on my own and CKC’s social media platforms.</p>
<p></p>
<p>In October we went to the Texas Fleece and Fiber Festival in Kerrville. At my TextileFusion booth, Pinky Bear clowned around with a crocheted butterfly which I believed was stiffened with wax instead of starch. The result: a Waxwing Bear Fly. Pinky Bear visited with Rose, the crocheted sheep mascot of Yellow Rose Fiber Markets. He stood on her left shoulder.</p>

<p>A few days later, we carpooled with friends to the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas, and yes, we did find yarn there. Pinky and I loved Dusty’s Buttons and More, where vintage buttons were sorted by color. Since then, Pinky Bear has been at home on my desk.</p>

<p>Spindles, Peru, 2017. </p>
<p>As an avid spinner, I was eager to bring home some spindles from our hiking trip to Peru in 2017. Our guide helped me find them during a visit to a weaving and textile cooperative called the Asociacion Civil Apu Salkantay, Warmicuna de Mollepata, in Mollepata, Anta Province, Peru. <br /><br />Spindles were not offered for sale in the weaving shop, but upon learning of my interest in spinning, one of the women went home and came back in a few minutes with a plastic grocery bag filled with loose shafts and whorls. We fitted a few together and I purchased 3 spindles, with some raw Alpaca fiber to spin. I understood that she made the spindles herself. </p>
<p>These spindles are "low whorl" spindles. The shafts are sticks that, according to Abby Franquemont (https://abbysyarns.com/2011/02/peruvian-spindles-my-spindles/) are peeled and whittled into shape. The whorls are turned on a lathe, with ornamental lines burned into the wood. The tag pictured is for a beautiful handwoven gray Alpaca shawl I purchased from the shop; I include it because it identifies the name and location of the Warmicuna de Mollepata weaving and textile cooperative.</p>
<p>During our travels I saw men and women using spindles like these to spin Alpaca and wool yarns. I enjoy having and spinning with these working momentos of our trip. <br /><br /><br /></p>

<p>I traveled to Scotland with my husband in about 1998. He had cancer at the time and he wanted to make one last trip -- he chose England as his destination, and I said that if we went there, we would also have to go to Scotland, so I could enjoy exploring the knitting traditions there, and everyone was satisfied with this plan! I purchased the yarn for this shawl in Scotland in a shop that was associated with a woolen mill on the premises. The shawl features traditional cables and stitch patterns. It is still a wonderful memory of that trip. I do not currently recall the source of the pattern I used. </p>

<p>A cotton cloth doily with an elaborate needle lace (?) border. Made by Alice Eichelberger Cleland (1864-1938) in Middletown, Dauphin County, PA, USA sometime between 1890 - 1900. Cleland was an excellent and prolific needlewoman, who must have been working constantly on crocheting.</p>

<p>These two pineapple pattern doilies were likely to have been made by my great-grandmother, Alvina Billig in 1946 or after. The smaller one is slightly tan in color and measures 7 inches across. The larger doily is made in a thicker crochet thread and measures 8.5 inches across.</p>
<p>The pattern is in the book "Featuring 14 New Pineapple Designs" from Clark's O.N.T. J. & P. Coats, book no. 230 issued in 1946. Note the price printed on the book - 10 cents! The pattern is doily no. 7768-A and is on page 6 of the pattern book. The book is bent back to this page, for easy access while making the doilies.</p>

<p>These two doilies made in a pinwheel design were likely made by my great-grandmother, Alvina Billig, and I'm guessing they date from the 1930s - 1940s. The smaller one is mainly tan with a white border and measures 6.5 inchess across. The larger doily is white, made with a thicker crochet thread, and measures 8.25" across.</p>

<p>This is a Navy sweater knit by Rebecca Keyel in 2016 from a sweater pattern originally designed by the American Red Cross in the late 1930s. The pattern (designated ARC 400-3) appeared in a Red Cross pattern book issued by the Milwaukee Chapter of the American Red Cross in 1941, and was reprinted numerous times between 1939 and 1965. The garment is knit all in one piece and finished by sewing the sides of the garment to close. The contributor knit the sweater using worsted weight wool yarn (Quince and Co Lark) and US size 8 casein needles as part of a doctoral dissertation on women's volunteer knitting during the First and Second World War. It is one of 13 other objects knit for the project.</p>

An accessory set comprised of pillbox style hat with hexagonal crown, fringed scarf, and mittens, ca. 1998. Designed and knitted by Anna Bell Bray, a noted creator of traditional Shetland garments. Purchased in Shetland, UK by Betty H. Lindsay for Jennifer Lindsay. Anna Bell Bray's work is distinguished by her painterly use of color and pattern, the interplay of dark and light values for maximum visual impact, and by the couturier details and finishes she gave to each garment. Her preference for knitting with pastel colors on dark backgrounds lends her work a distinctive, luminous quality. In this composition, pale peach stars dominate, while the darker diamond motifs recede against a network of tiny diamond patterns in the borders framing the center panel, and on the reverse sides of scarf and mittens. The star-patterned crown of the hat echoes the glowing star motifs. Since her death, Anna Bell Bray’s importance to the contemporary history of Shetland Knitting is honored annually at the Cunningsburgh Agricultural Society Show when the most promising knitter is awarded the Anna Bell Bray Prize for the best hand knitted Fair Isle Garment. Detailed Measurements: Hat: 20" x 4” x 6” Diameter (measured from point to point on star-shaped crown) 6" Height 4" Scarf: 48.25" x 6.5” (not including fringe) Fringe 3.75" Mittens: Mitten 1 (cuff matches hatband): Cuff: 2.25” x 3.5” Total (with folded cuff): 8.75” x 3.5” Thumb: 2.5” Mitten 2: Cuff: 2.5” x 3.5” Total (with folded cuff): 8 7/8” x 3.5” Thumb: 2.5” Note that Mitten 1 is slightly different from Mitten 2, and there are slight differences in the measurements for each. Scholarly Notes and Resources: Alice Starmore included a photo of one of Anna Bell Bray's Shetland sweaters in Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting, published by The Taunton Press, Newtown, CT, 1988. Starmore wrote on page 29, "Bearing testimony to the fact that the Oil Age has not entirely extinguished the genuine art of Fair Isle knitting, this 1986 sweater, designed by Annabel Bray, displays an elaborate use of border patterns, some of them asymmetrical.” Starmore further stated that Norwegian style patterns (like those favored by Anna Bell Bray), became popular in Shetland and Fair Isle knitting after World War II. <p><span>This is a man's vest made by Anna Bell Bray of Shetland, UK for my husband, Wade Lindsay, in late 1997 or early 1998. The vest is made of Jamieson and Smith Jumper Weight wool yarn in a combination of 11 dyed natural colors, solid colors, and tweeds in the traditional manner -- knitted from the bottom up, in the round, using no more than 2 colors per round. The V-neck and armholes are steeked and cut, with the edgings picked up and knitted after cutting. Anna Bell Bray typically knitted her garments using a traditional knitting belt and 5 long steel needles. </span></p>
<p></p>
<p><span>During a visit to Shetland in July 1997 with my mother-in-law, Betty Lindsay and father-in-law Joe Lindsay, we met Anna Bell Bray at the Islesburgh Exhibition, where she and a group of accomplished knitters and designers from the area exhibited and sold their work. As I've written elsewhere, Anna Bell Bray’s work is distinguished by couturier details that are difficult to achieve in knitwear made using traditional Shetland knitting techniques. She agreed to knit a vest for my husband -- to be sent to us whenever it was completed -- sizing him on the spot just by looking at him. We knew whatever she created would be amazing, and so it is.</span></p>
<p></p>
<p><span>The photos show many views of the vest, and capture Anna Bell Bray's masterful use of light and dark values and large Norwegian-style star motifs to achieve an almost kaleidoscopic visual effect. An unusual ribbing with checkerboard detail adds distinction. As shown in the inside-out photo, the neck ribbing reveals a patterned facing, while the hem and armholes have plain facings. These facings give the garment a more finished look by enclosing the raw edges, and allow it to better hold its shape. The facings also reduce the chance of excessive wear at these common stress points. </span></p>

<p><span>The subtle gradations in the colors, and their placement, serve to keep the eye moving over the design so that it always looks fresh and interesting. For example, one brown used in the ribbing is not used in the main body of the sweater, while the tweed yarns are used sparingly to point up the centers of the motifs. </span></p>

This afghan was made by my paternal grandmother. She was a talented seamstress. She made much of her own wardrobe throughout her life as well as clothes for her grandchildren. She crocheted less often than she sewed. She is the person who taught me how to crochet when I was about ten years old.
The crocheted afghan is worked in 10 different neutral colors, mostly shaded in order. Were ends woven in as she worked? This would be a lot of ends to weave in! There is a subtle diagonal line in the pattern. A search of my pattern dictionaries did not turn up this stitch. The fabric seems to be based on single crochet worked only through the back of the loop. The diagonal stitches travel across the surface of the fabric. With a little experimentation, I got a similar effect by crocheting normally into the back loop of a stitch, then working into the front loop of the same stitch by inserting the hook top to bottom. I do not know if my paternal grandmother was following a pattern or if she was improvising.
A burn test confirmed the afghan is made of acrylic yarn. There is quite a bit of damage, which I initially thought were moth holes. Am wondering if a pet tore this afghan?

Baumgärtels clothing store on August-Bebel-Strasse in Schwarzenbach an der Saale, Germany, sold ready-made clothing and offered custom knitted garments. The Baumgärtel family lived above the shop. Anna Wirth Thompson fondly remembered a blue dress with a patterned circular yoke her mother ordered specially-made for her at Baumgärtels. She wore the dress on Christmas Eve, in 1941, as shown in one of the photos here. She was almost six years old. Anna's father was the teacher at the village school in Sorg, at the foot of the Fichtel Mountains in Franconia, Germany. The family lived in a home attached to the school building. In 1942, Anna fell ill with scarlet fever. Hers was a severe case, and she spent six weeks in hospital in the city of Hof. When the time finally came for her to return to Sorg, her mother brought the blue knitted dress for Anna to wear. She put it on, and it was shockingly short! Anna had grown taller during her stay at the hospital. After World War II, Anna, her brothers, and her widowed mother moved to Schwarzenbach an der Saale, to live with Anna's maternal grandmother. The house was across the street behind Baumgärtels. Eventually, Anna's mother had Baumgärtels knit her another dress, this time a wine-red one. By the 1960s, Anna had emigrated to the United States, lived and worked in New York City, and moved to Texas to marry Alan Thompson, and start a family. During the mid-1960s, when the Thompson family lived in Plainview, Texas, Anna's mother sent care packages from Germany, which often contained crewel embroidery yarns, pillow tops and tablecloths stamped for embroidery, and knitting yarn, as well as German chocolate and Advent calendars. One package had soft wool yarn samples from Baumgärtels, which they no longer needed. Anna used the sample yarns to knit slipper socks for her daughter Suzann and son Eric. The stranded color patterns in the socks were Anna's own design. Suzann's slipper socks were reinforced with soles crocheted from cut-up nylon stockings. Anna mended Eric's slipper socks more than once. In 2023, the house where Anna lived in Schwarzenbach is still there (though remodeled by later occupants), and the building that used to be Baumgärtels clothing store is a shoe store. <p>History of Blue Hand-Knitted Ski Sweater Handwritten by Mary Ruth McGinnis (transcribed)</p>
<p>"November 16, 2015</p>
<p>Augusta Adelia Lehner Newman knitted this sweater for her son, Charles Wynn Newman, Jr., when he was a boy. So it was knitted sometime in the late 1920s to early 1930s.</p>
<p>After he outgrew the sweater, his younger sister, Margaret Thais Newman McGinnis, began wearing it in the late 1940s. </p>
<p>In the 1960s, Margaret’s son, Paul Lee McGinnis, began wearing it.</p>
<p>In the 1970s, Margaret’s daughter, Mary Ruth McGinnis, took over wearing the sweater.</p>
<p>Sometime in the 1980s, Margaret darned a hole in the lower back of the sweater and the right sleeve cuff.</p>
<p>The sweater was retired from use about 2000."</p>
<p><strong>CKC Notes:</strong><br /><br />David M. Newman contributed this sweater to the Center for Knit and Crochet in December 2021. It was originally knitted for his father, Charles Wynn Newman, Jr., when the family lived in Detroit, MI. David M. Newman commented, "I have no use for the sweater and although I have no wish to display it I recognize that it may serve as a well-executed example of a traditional craft performed in the service of the craftperson’s family." </p>
<p>The sweater appears to be knitted of navy blue wool accented with traditional Scandinavian-style decorative motifs in red, yellow, green, and white. The motifs are made using two techniques -- stranded knitting (patterns are knitted in) and duplicate stitch (patterns are applied as surface decoration after knitting). The sweater shows signs of wear and has been repaired, which only attests to the family's appreciation and care of the maker's work. It has otherwise survived in excellent condition. It is notable that the sweater was worn and enjoyed by several generations of the family.<br /><br />The sweater and accompanying documentation will be used for educational and promotional purposes by the CKC to encourage others to add their knit and crochet items and stories to CKC's Crowdsourced Collection. </p>

An account of the resource
This is a flower loom afghan in acrylic yarn. The lower/outer petals are white. Each center is worked in one of nine different colors. The field of 357 flowers is a hexagonal grid of 16 by 23 — in a hexagonal pattern, it is 12 columns with 16 flowers and 11 columns with 15 flowers. The flowers are crocheted together with green.
This afghan kit was purchased by my father, Barry Jon Elder, for my paternal great-grandmother, Maude Virginia Graham Elder, while she was convalescing. My great-grandmother was a prolific crocheter. She said she didn’t want to make the daisy loom afghan, that it was too hard. (I suspect it was simply she preferred to crochet and the daisy loom didn’t appeal.) My father’s feelings were hurt that his thoughtful gift was rejected. To prove it wasn’t hard, he took back the kit and made all the daisies himself.
My father enjoyed carpentry and model airplanes, but he did not typically do yarn crafts. He was a pilot for United Airlines. The daisy afghan was a useful project to do on layovers between flights. Tragically, he was the second officer on United 553.
After the daisies were complete, my maternal grandmother — i.e. my father’s mother-in-law — crocheted the daisies together.
When I search online, I see variations of this afghan. Sometimes the daisies are all the same color. Sometimes the daisies are joined in a square orthogonal grid instead of the hexagonal grid in my example. The daisies in my afghan use nine different colors for their centers. This is acrylic yarn.
This style of yarn craft and color scheme is typical for the 1970s. On Ravelry there is a listing for Wildflower Afghan/ Flower Loom Afghan by Bucilla kits. It is this afghan but with only identical yellow-centered flowers. The loom tool has “STUDIO TWELVE FLOWER LOOM” embossed on it. An internet search uncovers books, instructions, and flower looms from Studio Twelve, typically dating around 1970.

This piece is a crocheted mandala designed and made by textile artist Michelle Beerbower. It was made in 2026 as another piece in her collection “Mandalas of Healing”. The artist used US hook size H-8 and G-6 with mix acrylic/cotton yarn. This piece was made as a tribute to her journey and continued story of healing and going from chaos to harmony. It tells the story of family, meaning, and the contributing factors of our journey on this earth and our artful expression. The artists grandmother sat with her patiently showing her how to use her own youthful hands to weave the loops and stitches with grace precision and great care. This mindfulness in motion creative endeavor weaves stories, prayers, and wishes into the fabric with each stitch. There is a remarkable significance in the cadence of creating a series of repetitive knots and turning them into beautiful treasures to adorn the body or the home. Creation with the hands awakens a deep awareness of the beauty and the value of “things” in our lives. But more than that, looping the yarn invites peace and a deeply spiritual story emerges with the collection of stitches. Taking the seemingly chaotic group of knots and transforming them into an artful item to behold is a transcendent experience.
The significance of circles plays a key role in the artist vision for her collection. For instance, circles are representative of enlightenment, or they may represent the spirit. In indigenous cultures, circles are used for sweat lodges and drum circles and represent harmony, balance and treasured oneness with nature. Knots also carry a specific significance as they are used in prayer beads symbolizing the connection to the higher power. The artists finds that the repetitive knots create a quiet atmosphere to connect and for healing.

The artist used US hook size I-9 with acrylic yarn. This piece was made as a tribute to her journey and continued story of healing and going from chaos to harmony. It tells the story of family, meaning, and the contributing factors of our journey on this earth and our artful expression. The artist’s grandmother sat with her patiently showing her how to use her own youthful hands to weave the loops and stitches with grace precision and great care. This mindfulness in motion creative endeavor weaves stories, prayers, and wishes into the fabric with each stitch.
