Description
An account of the resource
Baumgärtels clothing store on August-Bebel-Strasse in Schwarzenbach an der Saale, Germany, sold ready-made clothing and offered custom knitted garments. The Baumgärtel family lived above the shop. Anna Wirth Thompson fondly remembered a blue dress with a patterned circular yoke her mother ordered specially-made for her at Baumgärtels. She wore the dress on Christmas Eve, in 1941, as shown in one of the photos here. She was almost six years old. Anna's father was the teacher at the village school in Sorg, at the foot of the Fichtel Mountains in Franconia, Germany. The family lived in a home attached to the school building. In 1942, Anna fell ill with scarlet fever. Hers was a severe case, and she spent six weeks in hospital in the city of Hof. When the time finally came for her to return to Sorg, her mother brought the blue knitted dress for Anna to wear. She put it on, and it was shockingly short! Anna had grown taller during her stay at the hospital. After World War II, Anna, her brothers, and her widowed mother moved to Schwarzenbach an der Saale, to live with Anna's maternal grandmother. The house was across the street behind Baumgärtels. Eventually, Anna's mother had Baumgärtels knit her another dress, this time a wine-red one. By the 1960s, Anna had emigrated to the United States, lived and worked in New York City, and moved to Texas to marry Alan Thompson, and start a family. During the mid-1960s, when the Thompson family lived in Plainview, Texas, Anna's mother sent care packages from Germany, which often contained crewel embroidery yarns, pillow tops and tablecloths stamped for embroidery, and knitting yarn, as well as German chocolate and Advent calendars. One package had soft wool yarn samples from Baumgärtels, which they no longer needed. Anna used the sample yarns to knit slipper socks for her daughter Suzann and son Eric. The stranded color patterns in the socks were Anna's own design. Suzann's slipper socks were reinforced with soles crocheted from cut-up nylon stockings. Anna mended Eric's slipper socks more than once. In 2023, the house where Anna lived in Schwarzenbach is still there (though remodeled by later occupants), and the building that used to be Baumgärtels clothing store is a shoe store. Description
An account of the resource

Over the years, people who knew my love for knitting, crochet, and sewing entrusted me with related supplies they no longer needed, or those they inherited from loved ones and were unlikely to use.

When it came time to craft these holiday table mats, my received button collection came in handy. The plan was to use holiday-themed crochet applique to embellish a pair of shaggy felt rectangles.

I crocheted corrugated leaves, inspired by similar leaves in Irish Crochet lace. Crocheted with red yarn and arranged in a wide circle with stems pointing inward, the corrugated leaves made a pretty good approximation of a poinsettia flower. That was appropriate, because live poinsettia petals are specialized leaves. I tried adding crocheted green leaves, because poinsettias have those as well. No matter how I arranged them, they overwhelmed the red "petals." The piece needed green though, so I added green buttons, which probably came from the estate of one of my aunts.

A slightly altered, crocheted fern frond made a reasonable Christmas tree. My then five-year-old daughter Ella helped me choose the best red buttons to decorate the tree. Ella wanted to decorate her own tree mat, so we found a crocheted leaf, sewed it to a scrap of felt, and sewed button ornaments on it. Unfortunately, I could find only a very small photo of Ella's holiday mat.

The edges of the shaggy felt were wavy. Since the felt was synthetic, I was reluctant to press it with a hot iron. The edges needed a trim or something else to weigh them down and flatten them.

My sister-in-law's sister, Sharon, had worked in a fabric store and collected several half-gallon tubs of buttons. Sharon decided she would never use them all, so she passed them along to me. With a trove of buttons like hers, I could afford to be extravagant. I sewed a solid line of buttons just inside the edges of each holiday table mat. That flattened the edges.

I am grateful that people thought of me when they had sewing, knitting, and crochet supplies they didn't need. Naturally, I couldn't keep everything, so I passed along items I wouldn't use in a thoughtful and respectful way.

Description
An account of the resource

My mother, Anna Wirth Thompson (1936- ) learned to knit, crochet, embroider, and sew in school in Germany, where she was born and grew up. She taught me to knit when I was seven years old. I was in Mrs. Stone's second grade class at Edgemere Elementary School in Plainview, Texas, at the time.

First, I knitted the yellow piece, which was about 5 inches wide at the start. As many beginning knitters do, I accidentally added stitches, so the width at my last row was 6.75 inches. The piece measured 4.75 inches from bottom to top. The yarn was probably wool.

I had watched my mother knit slipper socks for my father. They were blue with a wondrous stranded pattern in red. After the heel, she worked two sets of 2 x 2 stranded checks, for a total of four rounds. Then came a decorative diamond shaped pattern, and finally another 4 rounds of 2 x 2 checks.

"Mom, I want to knit checks," I told her. She gave me more wool, and told me how to knit checks. I offer written instructions, all these years later:

Row 1: *k 4, p 4;* rep from * across.

Rows 2-5 (or so): Knit the knits and purl the purls.

Row 6: Purl the knits and knit the purls.

Rows 7-10: Repeat Rows 2-5.

Following her spoken instructions, I created a (mostly) checkerboard pattern with textures. But, "Mom, I want to knit colors!" I said, thinking of the checks on the slipper socks she made.

She gave me multi-color yarn in the Fiesta colorway. I guess that satisfied me for a time. The finished piece was 5 to 6 inches wide and 10-ish inches from cast on to bind off.

My mom influenced the course of my life by teaching me how to knit. I am glad she did.

An account of the resource

My version of the Nantucket Jacket designed by Norah Gaughan and published in the Winter 2006 issue of Interweave Knits, pages 62-64; Ravelry pattern page here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/nantucket-jacket, and my Ravelry project page here: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/igel/nantucket-jacket Like many who have knit this pattern I altered it, but I only extended the sleeves, adjusted the trim to place the scallops over the buttonholes, only used four buttons, and tacked the collar down in the back over the seam between the collar and the body (further details on my Ravelry project page). It is knit of Jupiter Moon Farm Sabine yarn, worsted weight, 40% Cotton, 30% Llama, 30% Merino, modeled by myself.

History of Blue Hand-Knitted Ski Sweater Handwritten by Mary Ruth McGinnis (transcribed)

"November 16, 2015

Augusta Adelia Lehner Newman knitted this sweater for her son, Charles Wynn Newman, Jr., when he was a boy. So it was knitted sometime in the late 1920s to early 1930s.

After he outgrew the sweater, his younger sister, Margaret Thais Newman McGinnis, began wearing it in the late 1940s.

In the 1960s, Margaret’s son, Paul Lee McGinnis, began wearing it.

In the 1970s, Margaret’s daughter, Mary Ruth McGinnis, took over wearing the sweater.

Sometime in the 1980s, Margaret darned a hole in the lower back of the sweater and the right sleeve cuff.

The sweater was retired from use about 2000."

CKC Notes:

David M. Newman contributed this sweater to the Center for Knit and Crochet in December 2021. It was originally knitted for his father, Charles Wynn Newman, Jr., when the family lived in Detroit, MI. David M. Newman commented, "I have no use for the sweater and although I have no wish to display it I recognize that it may serve as a well-executed example of a traditional craft performed in the service of the craftperson’s family."

The sweater appears to be knitted of navy blue wool accented with traditional Scandinavian-style decorative motifs in red, yellow, green, and white. The motifs are made using two techniques -- stranded knitting (patterns are knitted in) and duplicate stitch (patterns are applied as surface decoration after knitting). The sweater shows signs of wear and has been repaired, which only attests to the family's appreciation and care of the maker's work. It has otherwise survived in excellent condition. It is notable that the sweater was worn and enjoyed by several generations of the family.

The sweater and accompanying documentation will be used for educational and promotional purposes by the CKC to encourage others to add their knit and crochet items and stories to CKC's Crowdsourced Collection.

Description
An account of the resource

My grandmother, Esther Curry, tatted these stars for me, at my request, when I was a girl of about 10 or 11 years old (early 1970s); they may well mark my very first personal acquisition in what has become a lifelong fascination & enjoyment of fiber arts. I remember Grandma was hesitant to make them, because as she finally admitted, she was unsure how to work them; as far as I know, she rarely - if ever - worked from a pattern, and I think she generally made edgings, rather than motifs. Nevertheless, she figured it out, and gave me 12 stars, which my mother showed me how to block & stiffen with starch for use as tree ornaments. They have been a cherished part of my Christmas tradition for about 50 years.

The stars are worked in what my grandmother called "tatting cotton"; I'm unsure of the size, possibly size 40 tatting thread. Tatting is worked with a shuttle, and my grandmother had two that she favored: a small silver one that she used for finer work and a larger shuttle, which might have been made of bakelite, that she used with larger gauge thread. I think these stars would have fallen into the "finer work" category.

Grandma always wore a dress, or apron, with a pocket, and she always kept a bit of handwork there, usually tatting (or a quilting square she was hand-piecing for one of her many quilts). If she had a few minutes, whether waiting for her yummy cinnamon rolls to bake, visiting with the neighbor or waiting for her bus, you'd see her reach into her pocket & draw out her latest project – this is how I always remember her.

These simple stars are not her fanciest work, but they do speak to her aesthetic – cheerful & homey, a soft personal touch that could raise a humble cuff, collar or hem out of the ordinary.

various sized snowflakes, approximately 2 - 4 in in diameter; crocheted in white Aunt Lydia's brand #10 crochet cotton with a #8 or perhaps #7 steel hook
Description
An account of the resource

Some of the designs pictured here are probably by Deborah Atkinson (Ravelry); I learned a lot from studying & making her snowflake patterns. Others in the picture are of my own design. I entered these pictures in CraftStylish's "Dare to Make it: Holiday, 2014" contest -- and won the top prize!

The snowflakes were crocheted using white Aunt Lydia's brand #10 cotton crochet thread using a #8 or #7 steel hook. Once completed, I blocked and starched the flakes so they would hold their shape as ornaments on the Christmas tree.

Growing up in Mississippi, snow was a rarity. After that, I continued to live in the southerly climates of Florida & Texas. A "White Christmas" has never really been a possibility (except during the couple of years I spent living in Germany). Around 2014 or so, I decided to kick my crochet skills up a notch by learning to use the tiny steel hooks & cotton thread. Doilies didn't really appeal to me, but snowflakes! ❄ I could have a White Christmas -- without the cold...or the need to shovel!

For a time, I was addicted to making these. Each one was a small, compact & quickly finished project. Because no two snowflakes are alike, I felt free to make variations & create totally new designs. I made so many snowflakes that I started giving them away. Eventually, all my snowflakes had new homes, and my passion for making them melted away just like the snow...but I still have the memories.

This Christmas stocking is one of a pair of stockings that Betty Lindsay, my mother-in-law, had knitted for me and my sister-in-law when we joined the family. The pattern is the Victorian Stocking Pattern by Valerie Root, published in Better Homes and Gardens Holiday Celebrations Magazine, 1993. At the same time, Betty had coordinating stockings in a different design knitted for our husbands – her sons. I am still searching for the source of the patterns for those.

This stocking is hand knitted of cream-colored wool. The wool is DK weight. The design features panels of heavily embossed bobbles in a swag pattern separated by columns of garter ribbing. The top of the stocking features a knitted loop for hanging the stocking, and a knitted casing, 1.5 inches wide, that holds a 1” wide, dark green grosgrain ribbon. Below the ribbon casing, there is a 3.25” deep decorative edging, heavily embossed with bobbles. The initials “JL” are embroidered in green wool on the heel of the stocking using duplicate stitch. I recall that my sister-in-law's stocking was finished about a year earlier, and that hers had a red ribbon and red initials.

Betty was the co-owner with Bonne Hassler of Yarns International in Bethesda, Maryland. Betty and Bonnie hired several knitters to knit samples for the store and to do commission knitting and repairs for customers, and it is likely that one of these knitters was hired to knit the stockings. The knitting and finishing details are all beautifully and skillfully done.

Betty’s Christmases were legendary celebrations, and I know she filled this stocking for me when she gave it to me. It is simply gargantuan, measuring 27.5” inches from top of stocking to tip of toe, and 9” wide (18” in circumference)!

I like to think the large size demonstrates my mother-in-law’s overwhelming love for me, but from notes shared by “theytoldmesew” – another knitter who posted her project on Ravelry, www.ravelry.com, the photo of the pattern in the magazine was deceptive. The instructions include more repeats around and more repeats in length than the magazine photo of the stocking shows, resulting in a much larger stocking than would be expected. The large size is especially obvious and humorous when I hang it next to the stocking Betty had knitted for my husband that same year.

Because of its size, I use this stocking as a fun holiday decoration, but not as a Chrsitmas stocking. My sister-in-law found a different use for her gargantuan stocking, along with some of the swatches in Betty’s large swatch collection. She had them cut up, felted, and sewn into multiple stockings – one for each family member. You can see an example of one such stocking, which has a cuff made from a portion of her original Victorian Stocking, now felted.

It is wonderful to see these items getting the love they deserve, whether in their original form, or in a new one.

Description
An account of the resource

During a visit to my grandmother's cousin, Clara Schultz-Sierrko, when I was a child, she let me play with a small teddy bear that she had crocheted. I loved it so much that I hated to leave it and Clara gave in to my pleading and let me take it home with me. Sometime after that, I crocheted my own bear using the original bear as a guide. Both are made with variegated yarn; the second is stuffed with nylon stockings and I don't know what's in the original bear. They both remind me of happy childhood times with family members who are no longer with us.

Description
An account of the resource

The pattern for this single-crochet top, with an apple motif, came from a Woman's Day or Family Circle magazine published in the mid-1970s. I was in high school at the time, and loved the bold design. It was the first time I had crocheted two colors in one row, but I just followed the instructions, and all was well. Since the top was short-sleeved, naturally I thought of it as a summer garment. However, the yarn was worsted-weight acrylic, which isn't the best fiber to wear during a sweltering hot Texas summer. On the other hand, it would have been good inside, because many businesses and classrooms were over-airconditioned. In May 2017, my daughter Eva tried on the crocheted top with the apple. With her permission, I include the photo I took of her then. The top measures 33" around the body at the underarm; from hem to shoulder, it is 18.5". I don't know who designed this cute top.

Description
An account of the resource

I took this photo of my grandma on her birthday--we had made the cake, and I had used for it what were in my opinion the best candleholders, the ballerina candleholders. My grandma was an excellent crocheter, as were most of the Italian and Italian-American women in my family; crochet was considered something that the women in the family did. They could all embroider, do at least basic sewing, and some did more--my grandmother crocheted beautiful things her whole life, moving to crocheting with only thicker yarns as her eyesight and arthritis in her hands made working with thinner yarns and threads more difficult. Her mother, and perhaps she as well, also tatted. My grandmother could also sew anything.
