Alternately witty and passionate, the deftmusic and lyrics prompted mam' critics to comparecomposer William Finn to the legendary StephenSondheim. Among the song titles -"The Thrill of FirstLove", "Four Jews in a Room Bitching", "Making aHome", Father to Son", and "Unlikely Lovers".Written by William Finn and James Lapine, theshow is actually a combination of two separate one-actmusicals: "March of the "Falsettos'" (written in 1979)and its sequel. "Falsettoland" (1990). During their off-Broadway runs, the two shows had only a small cultfollowing. But when the authors combined them underthe umbrella title palscttos, they came up with a tremendous Broadway success New York Times critic FrankRich gave the show a rave review, particularly praisingthe casual yet honest treatment of its gay characters:"Falsettos docs not depict homosexuals as abject victimsof prejudice and disease, nor campy figures of fun, but assometimes likable, sometimes fallible, sometimes witty,sometimes smarmy, sometimes noble people no more orless extraordinary than the rest of the world" "In otherwords, gay people are just part of the family," Richcontinued, "people who fight and argue and ultimatelyAt the topof the show, we meet Marvin, a well-to-do,boyish and somewhat neurotic yuppie who's just left anunhappy marriage to move in with his gay lover - anattractive but tempestuous athlete name Whizzer. However, Marvin still tries to keep the line of communicationopen with his ex-wife, Trina, and adolescent son, Jasonand dreams of combining those around him into a cohesive "light-knit family". Finding herself suddenly single,thcdistraughlTrinaconsultsapsychiatristnamed Mendel(who is perhaps more neurotic than his patients). Concerned thathe's jeopardized his tics with his only child, Marvinendeavors to find a balance between satisfying adultrelationships and his parental obligations. Two additional characters arc introduced in the second act —Charlotte and Cordelia, Marvin's beloved friends, comically referred to as "the lesbians from next door." But thestory takes a serious turn as "Falsettos" moves from the' 70s to the' 80s, and Whizzer contracts a mysterious "gayvirus". The extended family has to extend itself beyondexpectations.Leading the cast if J. Stuart Mill in the role ofMarvin. He starred as John Wi Ikes Booth in "Assassins"at the Phoenix last season, and his other local creditsinclude "Tintypes" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" at theEdyvean Repertory Theatre; "Mail, Mack and Mabel",and "Chess" at the Theatre on the Square; and "TheMusic Man" at Footliglit Musicals. The Phoenix castalso includes John Gray as Whizzer, Catherine Moblcyas Trina, and Michael Klass as Mendel. Gray is new toIndianapolis, but Moblcy and Klass arc well-known fromtheir frequent performances at Civic Theatre, Theatre onthe Square, the Edy\can, and the Phoenix.Directing the PhocnixThcatcr production is SuzanneFleenor, a veteran Indianapolis actress/director and anoriginal founding member of the Phoenix. She stages therecent Phoenix hits "Mama Drama" and "Assassins".David Hochoy, artistic director of Dance Kaleidoscope,will choreograph "Falsettos". Fleenor's production staffalso includes musical director Paul Galloway, scenicdesigner Paul Bernard Killian, and state manager MattRoberts."Falsettos" runs on the Phoenix Mainstage September 15 through October 23.
