Yes, the mail is still coming thru slow here - yesterday I received #147 of Jan. 31 and #150 of Feb. 2 - am missing the two in between. Also got a long envelope with the cat picture, Jean's letter and various clippings. There was something a little pathetic in Jean's writing about sleeping downstairs with Muz and lying awake talking - not because they did so, but because they didn't do so years ago. There is something about the darkness. We'll have lots to lie awake talking about (or not talking about!) when I get back, and I shan't be worried about losing sleep this time. Whom did Jean go to St. Louis to see - did she say in a previous letter? #145 You say ‚Äònow be honest honey - thirty days is awful short, for all we have to make up!‚Äô - my only intention was to be honest, darling, and to calculate the chances‚Ä¶I know that 30 days is short, that it might hurt more than not having it at all, but I say that it would be worth taking on that basis. So would one day. However, if I knew that in another 3 mos. I could get back to the States for good, I‚Äôd wait. Still haven't had time to look up Dr. H, though I know where he is. I'm glad you got to see the pictures and that [Mrs.?] H. is a pleasant person. So many pictures of Wendy as you describe [pg 2] her are a delight to imagine - riding around on top of a market basket, having her first taste of ice cream, just lots of little things. Today is a glorious day. Tonight sun, blue sky, lovely cloud formations, and air that feels like the beginning of fall in New York. Carmel weather just now must be something like the weather here. There are slight evidences of season - certain few bare trees are beginning to put out shoots and to bear curious blossoms - but in general flowers and bushes keep on blooming as they do the year around. I don't stop to appreciate half the natural beauty of this place. Yesterday, though, I made a quick trip with Coach Hager and an enlisted man who's on the pay line with me to the highest point on the island (the highest near here, at any rate), from which practically the whole island was visible. The time (between afternoon and evening pay lines) was late afternoon and the setting incomparable beautiful. It is hard to appreciate it because even if my own work allowed me to relax a little and turn my attention to such irrelevant themes as the beauties of nature, the current atmosphere would make it too uncomfortable to enjoy anything. No, that's an exaggeration; it hasn't really touched me personally [pg 3] yet and I shouldn't allow it to affect me that much if it did. There are many, many funny (and what's more remarkable, true) stories going around about certain recent arrivals to this place. If I were to write subsequently of X and Y in no particular context perhaps you‚Äôd know to whom I was referring. #146. The message Helen referred to was Greetings written just under the censorship stamp - I happened to censor a letter of Charlie's that day. Thanks to both of you for the picture of the pussy family - I'll give it to some youngster. The news about the men at Ord is tough on us, isn't it? Yet I can't help but believe that this experience now will have been worth something to us. Do you really think you could see the carriage for $50? You‚Äôre a better business man than I am. I know what you mean about you and Wendy being all to yourselves - you wouldn't miss a minute of taking care of Wendy, but somehow it isn't quite balanced. Darling, in that sense I'm not balance either, and I feel it everyday. Please return Bob Fs greetings and give my regards to all of them. Tell him there isn't a man here who wouldn't swap places even knowing what Ord is like (but for your own information, honey, there isn't a man here who would have said that [pg 4] before he‚Äôd been out at all. Quite a storm you must have had! Your making the fancy knitting needle case was one of those little triumphs I so much enjoy hearing about. Glad you didn't change your mind about getting the bathing suit. I mean, of course, that it doesn't really matter what you get as long as my small offering buys what most pleases you. Fun hearing about the Szathmarys and the [Melkays?]. Arthur Sz. is the one who, when they first came to Boulder, didn't believe in having babies during wartime. Say hello to Barbara C. for me. Sometimes I get so tired of this life‚Ä¶I want to be with you so much, darling, and have nothing to do but enjoy you and Wendy for a few weeks - yes, if I knew I had be out more than 18 mos. regardless of whether I got back home meanwhile or not, that one month would make a tremendous difference to me. But there may be grounds, as you say, for thinking that we'll be out of it before then. I love you terribly Warren]]></dcterms:description>
