Returns from fifty-five additional Lynden district residents this week brought the total sum received to date on Anti-tuberculosis Christmas Seals to $132, Mrs. Syl Weidkamp, in charge of the local drive, reported. Considering that the seals were mailed out less than two weeks ago, the total returns to date have been surprisingly large. In other years, all returns have not been made until long after New Year's. Those persons who have not paid for the stamps received by them through the mail, may make their returns at Tromp's Book Store. Additional stamps are available there. Christmas seals are sold now in forty-two countries and in each country the proceeds from this little sticker finance the campaign; of prevention and education which is so important in the fight against tuberculosis. Seals Are Gay Santa Claus, on the 1936 gay red and green seal, has been treated in the modern cartoon manner, which is considered fitting in view of the fact that this thirtieth annual seal has a message more optimistic than in former years. The death rate from tuberculosis is steadily though slowly declining, and well-known health authorities believe that tuberculosis can and will, in time, be eliminated. From being the highest cause of death, this disease has now become the seventh. Christmas Seals are credited with a big part in this accomplishment by the medical world. The proceeds from the sale of Christmas Seals finances the campaign of education and prevention which is aiding in cutting down the death rate, helping to preserve the health of the young of the country from infection. County Returns Larger Mrs. William Healy, chairman of the Christmas Seal sale committee of the Whatcom County Tuberculosis League, states that her report for the first ten days of the sale, made to the Washington Tuberculosis Association, shows a gain over the first ten days last year.
