Govt) FPO San Francisco Monday 18 June 1945 6:20 pm My dearest darling, No mail from you today - and busy as I've been, I understand how you must feel. And yet I know there is a certain satisfaction, however it fails to compensate, in your knowing that I am happy in my work (which at the moment consists largely in taking over some of Tel's scrounging - I'm hitting various units on the island for surplus food stocks: some day you must let me tell you how we pick up such things) and that I am - that is, we are, secure for the present and the predictable future. I must leave now for school - it's movie night, and tho it's not my turn to take the projectionist back afterwards. I want to be there to oversee the breaking in of our civilian operator, one of the police force who ran the [pg 2] local movie on Tinian before the war. We have our own 16 mm sound projector now and before long may be able to eliminate the tiresome trip back and forth - Till later, Sweetie 8:45 pm Hi - I escaped after the 2nd of three reels - The picture was ‚ÄúThe Youngest Profession‚Äù - a story about adolescent girl autograph hunters. As you might imagine, it stank. I asked Lewis and Trumbo how it was that Hollywood dumped all their lousy pictures out here, taking advantage of the poor helpless serviceman with no other entertainment who is almost forced to see them, and they explained to my understanding if not satisfaction by saying that the most Hollywood can turn out - good and bad - is about 400 pictures a year. In other words, with a different movie nearly every night we get virtually all of them. I agreed with them that there are perhaps 10 or 12 pictures a year [pg 3] worth seeing. #292 - the last picture of Wendy, darling, is so lovely [Well, whaddya know - we just had a practice air alarm! Our last real air raid was in December, or possibly New Year's Day - I forget which; either Christmas or New Year's. Tonight is the first anniversary of the sailing from Hawaii of the two ships, Sea Corporoal (popularly known as ‚ÄúSea Crapper‚Äù) and Jean LaFitte, which brought the men who came in on the original assault only a few remain - Mook, Reifsnider, Marsh Reddish (Supply), Dick Harper (Labor) Well, I got a drink out of it - bourbon and coke - and it was over by the time I‚Äôd finished the glass. I started writing this interpolation by flashlight; the lights are on again now. This morning, seeing Lewis and Trumbo off, I watched 10 or 12 B29s landing after a mission against a new target. I was particularly [pg 4] interested because that target is in the area I worked on at the Navy Dept. in Washington (the Nagoya area) - among other things, I wrote into the monograph a section on the disposition of Nagoya A.A. artillery, as indicated in captured operational orders of an A.A. battalion. Back to Wendy - I do love that picture, darling - the large, thoughtful eyes, the slightly knitted brow - I was glad to see that she has a full, if small, mouth - and big ears! I prefer character to delicacy, though there is so much about her that promises the latter also. And so to bed, with another full day to follow.
