Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource World War II Title A name given to the resource Sweater, Highneck Stock No. 55-S-64235 - 55-S-64252 Description An account of the resource The highneck sweater is a worsted wool , slip over high collar, buttoned neck sweater. The sweater had knit cuffs and waistband. There are five buttons at the neckline. From QM Sec 1 (August, 1943), p. 11: "An all worsted, slip over, high collar, buttoned neck sweater." This sweater was designed by Robert Bates. Robert Bates was a mountain climber who was assigned to the Quartermaster General's Office during World War II. He was part of a team who worked with the Mountain Training Group of what was to become the 10th Mountain Division to design, test and standardize cold weather clothing for the army. The sweater was based on his climbing experience where he wanted a sweater that could be opened to help cool off the body when it was warm and then be buttoned to help warm the body when it was cold. The sweater became a standard issue item throughout the army and not confined to the mountain troops. The Sweater, Highneck was carried in the Quartermaster Catalog under Stock Numbers 55-S-64234 thru 55-S-64252 depending on size. See Army Services Forces Catalog QM sec.
