Many sacrifices have been made on the altar of patriotism, but probably one of the oddest was the giving yesterday of a gold tooth by a woman to the Red Cross shop. This auriferous molar will go into the melting pot. Other unusual gifts include a pony, named Billy, gentle and gaited, and some live chickens which are sold almost before they reach the shop. A saddle and riding trousers given the shop were quickly sold. When one of the salespeople upset the melting pot the other day, a pair of gold-rimmed glasses dropped out. A bargain-hunting old lady seized upon them, tried them on, said they fitted her eyes better than any she ever had and purchased them. A little girl was elated at her reception at the jewelry counter. "You'd have thought I'd bought $100 worth, instead of a 10-cent hat pin," She said, "the way they treated me." There was a demand for violins yesterday, also trunks and suitcases, so any donations of these articles will find a ready market. Inexpensive party dresses are wanted, as they are sold as soon as they are hung on the racks. There is also a continued demand for tuxedo coats, knitting bags, piano lamps, sweaters, women's suits and blouses. Two unusual donations arrived by post from Canada yesterday. One was a pair of embroidered felt slippers made by a private gassed at Ypres. Another from a soldier wounded at the Somnie and at Vimy Ridge was a tidy made entirely with the wounded man's left hand. The contributors were Privates H. Farlow and D. S. Thompson.
