Signs for the Bargain Store and Schleif & Drake store are in view. A sign on the ground in front of the corner store advertises Christmas toys. Typed on back: Though no great amount of snow can be seen, the horse at the left of the picture is also blanketed. Occupying space in the McClaughry Block, Division at Fifth, at that time were Sterns Clothing, The Bargain Store and Schleif's, a variety store. Those spaces are now occupied by Winona Knits and Care Optic. Note the beautiful cornice of the 1882 building that was destroyed by a major fire in 1946. Typed on the back of a duotone copy of the image: This picture of the McClaughry Block, possibly soon after its completion, shows the Stern store with awning down, flapping in the wind. In the middle space of the building front, according to Schilling's 'Up and Down Main Street,' was a dry goods store operated by Tom Lowe who had been a dry goods traveling salesman. In the corner, O. T. McClaughry had his own store with a stock of notions. Sharing the space was his brother-in-law, Fred Harris, who sold sewing machines.</text>
