The decal features a color illustration of two deer drinking from a stream. Black text reads "WINSTON- / SALEM." Winston-Salem, North Carolina is the result of the merging of two neighboring towns, Salem and Winston, in 1913. Salem was founded in 1766 by members of the Moravian Church, the oldest Protestant denomination of fifteenth-century Bohemian origin. In 1849 the Moravians sold land to the newly-formed Forsyth County as the future site of the county seat, which was named Winston in honor of a local Revolutionary War figure. Winston developed economically following the laying of a railroad in 1873 and establishment of numerous tobacco warehouses and factories. Influential businesses that enhanced Winston-Salem's economic growth have included R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Wachovia Bank and Trust, Hanes Knitting Company, Piedmont Airlines, and the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
