Boyd enlisted with the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment on April 29, 1861 and was mustered as a sergeant in Company E. He was hospitalized between August and December of 1862 and returned commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Boyd was wounded in the right thigh at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 but returned to active duty in October. Boyd was mustered out with the regiment on May 5, 1864 and re-enlisted in Hatch's Battalion of Cavalry.
