<text>FIRST 5O YEARS OF THE COLLEGE OF SAINT BENEDICT (College of Saint Benedict) Physical education was required, though its credits did not count toward graduation. However, it was always part of the curriculum to promote the health of the student, to encourage participation in a wide variety of recreational and leisure-time activities and to develop character and leadership--therefore, the development of the whole person. All students were members of the Women's Athletic Association which, in turn, held membership in the state and national organization. The College Bulletin for 1938 listed the WAA's options for highly organized teams, small-group games and individual activity: archery, badminton, basketball, biking, community singing, croquet, deck tennis, golf, hiking, horseback riding, kitten ball, knitting, ping-pong, putting, shuffleboard, skating, social dancing, tennis, track and volley ball.</text>
