Melanie Derr, Miss Boating 1982, stands on carpeted steps while being crowned by an unidentified bearded man wearing a gray sweater with a burgundy, gold and beige pattern knitted in and brown corduroy pants who stands behind Melanie on a step higher with his arms risen to adjust the tiara on Melanie's head. Melanie wears a tiara, earrings, a necklace of one gem, square-neckline swimsuit with raspberry, white, violet, white alternating stripes outlining the neckline and straps and then a raspberry bodice and open-toed shoes. Her contestant card (7), is attached to her swimsuit on her left hip. She holds a bouquet of pink carnations, baby's breath, greenery and a pink ribbon on her right arm and steadies it with her left hand. She smiles directly at the photographer. A Patricia Stevens agency banner hangs behind them on silver lamé drapes. The show was held at the Kansas City Trade Mart in the downtown airport, Kansas City, Missouri.
