After this & about 6 or 8 miles above the Bluffs with an intention to shorten our passage round a large island took the first pass on the left side. It proved the shortest but so shallow as to have no current and we were obliged to row entirely through it which brot. us to sun down. When in the main channel again was obliged to go on till 8 at night before could find a landing place. The darkness of the night made it very perplexing. Tonight I have up my muskitoe net for the first time. Friday 8 May Left our landing place at 5 am & passed the Chickasaw Bluffs & landed at Fort Pickering at 7. At which place the officer (Capt Strong) sent a soldier to invite me to his quarters. Dressed myself in my Nankeens (for the first time this season) & waited upon him – was treated civilly by himself, [S..ng] Taylor & Mr. Pitterkin the Factor & at 12 o’clock went with them to dine with one Allan a farmer (one mile off) who had married an Indian Squaw about 20 years ago. Lived well & like civilized people. His wife had some education & could sew, knit &c. as other women. His children were white & very Marginal notation: 218 miles from the mouth of Ohio
