Linden School was named for the street on which it was located. In 1903 Linden School, located in Pittsburgh’s Point Breeze neighborhood, was constructed to accommodate the growing student population. It was one of a few schools in the Pittsburgh Public School system that was equipped with an in-house generator that supplied electricity for lighting in the building. In 1908 Linden was the first school in Pittsburgh to start a school garden. In 1927 a new addition, designed by local architect Thomas Pringle, was built that housed eight classrooms and an auditorium. Linden School, now known as Linden Academy, serves the Pittsburgh communities of Point Breeze and parts of Squirrel Hill. Acceptance to the school is contingent upon available space and racial balance.
