The Maria C. Vallejo Lace Collection

Center for Knit and Crochet (“CKC”) is honored to be the digital home of the Maria C. Vallejo Lace Collection, Photographed by George A. Leinonen.  This spectacular collection of more than 350 handmade textiles, collected over 60 years, demonstrates Ms. Vallejo’s deep love for the crafts and her reverence for all the makers, known and unknown, whose skillful hands labored to create the delicate details in each piece.  

The collection features wearables and home decor dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and encompassing a variety of textile techniques — knitting, crochet, tatting, bobbin lace, pulled thread lace, embroidery and more. The collection also includes a Yo-Yo throw, a kimono, a quilted blanket, and two antique sewing machines.  

George A. Leinonen’s dazzling photos of the collection allow one to view these textiles, all lovingly staged by Ms. Vallejo herself, at a comfortable visual distance, or to zoom in to see the intricacies of the handwork in each piece at an almost dizzying level of detail. 

Many of the artists and makers of these lace adornments for the wardrobe and the home remain unnamed and unknown.  With scholarship and attention, we hope some of their histories can be recovered.  We invite you to contact Center for Knit and Crochet, if you have information to share about the pieces themselves, or the featured techniques, that would assist us with cataloging and identification.

Es un honor para  el Center for Knit and Crochet ("CKC") tiene ser el hogar digital de la Colección de encaje Maria C. Vallejo y las fotos a cargo de George A. Leinonen.  Esta colección tan espectacular colección de más de 350 textiles hechos a mano, adquiridos a lo largo de sesenta  años, demuestra el profundo amor de Maria Cé por las artesanías y su reverencia por todos los las crearon, conocidos y desconocidos, cuyas habilidades manuales trabajaron para crear los los detalles de cada pieza. 

La colección presenta artículos para el hogar que datan desde finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, y abarcan una variedad de técnicas textiles: tejido de punto, ganchillo, encaje de bolillos, encaje de hilo tirado, bordado y muchos más. La colección también incluye una manta de Yo-Yo, un kimono, una manta acolchada y dos máquinas de coser antiguas. 

Las fotos deslumbrantes  de George A. Leinonen de la colección permiten ver estos textiles, todos puestos en escena personalmente y con cariño por Maria Cé, a una distancia visual cómoda al acercarse para ver las complejidades del trabajo manual en cada pieza a nivel de hilo y de puntada.
