By the end of the 1920s exposure of the legs, and a considerable portion of the rest of the body, was very much in fashion on the beaches of the Riviera and California. Tanned skin was, for the first time, in vogue. By 1931 men’s bathing suits featured deeply cut athletic tops and shorts of knitted or woven fabrics.
