Description

United States Army officer's red knit silk sash was worn by Javan B. Irvine during the Civil War. Irvine enlisted with the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment on April 29, 1861. Irvine attempted to raise a company for the 2nd Minnesota Infantry but due to a betrayal by his subordinates his attempt failed. Irvine immediately headed east to rejoin the 1st Minnesota, arriving just before First Battle of Bull Run and joining the fight in civilain clothes. Irvine was formally mustered back into the regiment on September 3, 1861, and served until December, when he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the 13th United States Infantry.
