Silk dress bodice

Created: circa 1865 - circa 1869

Black satin dress bodice with a black-on-black woven ribbon stripe. The dress has a round neckline, pagoda sleeves, a flared coattail back and a center front button and hook-and-eye closure with black crocheted ball buttons (one button is missing). The sleeve hem, bodice hem and coattail all have scalloped edges. There are piped seams at the neckline and armscye. The bodice is lined with cotton twill, the sleeves with pollished cotton and china silk. Two darts have been sewn into the side of the center front, and the side back seams curve into the armscye. The bodice is both machine- and hand-stitched.
