VERY SMALL BABY SOCK OF KNITTED COTTON, OF LIGHT TAN COLOR. HAS ORIGINAL PEALE TAG. THE SOCK WAS FORMERLY MOUNTED ON A PIECE OF WOOD WHICH HAS VARIOUS LABELS: U.S. EXPLORING EXPEDITION, CAPT. C. WILKES, USN, COMMANDER - MISSIONARY SCHOOL AT MAUI, SANDWICH IS., U.S. EXPLORING EXPEDITION, ETC. WASHINGTON CITY, USA, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION. OBJECT CONSERVED AND TAKEN OFF MOUNT FOR EXHIBIT. EXHIBITED MAGNIFICENT VOYAGERS, NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, 1985-86. A SHIPPING LIST NOTES THAT JOSEPH COUTHOUY WAS THE COLLECTOR OF ALL THESE "MISSION" PIECES.
FROM CARD: "HANDKNIT. LOANED TO BISHOP MUSEUM 1/23/78. RETURNED FROM BISHOP MUSEUM 2/15/78."
The records indicate this was collected at the "Seminary" on Maui. This is presumed to be the Wailuku Female Seminary for Hawaiian Girls, run by the Reverend Jonathan Smith Green and his wife Theodosia starting in 1837, and located in Wailuku, Maui. Edward Bailey and his wife Caroline later took over the running of the Wailuku Female Seminary.
