Description

Oral history; interview (and duplicate copy) with Leonard Strear about the Streer family, their house, and social history. Leonard was the brother of Ruth, Dorothy, and Sydney. The Streers lived in the Streer-Peterson House from 1918-1921, and Leonard wasn't born until 1924. He was one of the founders and the president of Longmont Foods, which was founded in 1950. When he was growing up, his family usually had cereal for breakfast, school lunch or a sandwich for lunch, and meat, potatoes, and vegetables for dinner. His mom cooked the meals; she also knitted, crocheted, and did needlepoint. The Streers were Jewish, and they celebrated Passover. This celebration included matzos, a bread substitute. His dad, Morris, had a Harley motorcycle before Leonard was born. He would drive a route to pick up live poultry and deliver them to Denver. He also opened a poultry house. His business was called Quality Poultry. Later, the business transformed into Strear Foods Company and expanded beyond poultry. In 1950 they stopped processing poultry in Denver and started Longmount Foods with the Pluss family. His mother was a very active homemaker. His mother's maiden name was Dinner. His paternal grandparents, Peter and Zelda, died in 1943 and 1938, respectively. His parents, Morris and Sophie, died in 1955 and 1978, respectively. His maternal grandmother, Minci, died circa 1947.
