Description
This Yoyo throw is made of industrial cotton printed fabric salvaged from women's and girl's dresses manufactured during the depression. Making yoyo quilts and throws continued to be popular through the 1930s and 40s. Small cut-out circular fabric patches could be carried and sewn into "yoyos,' in spare time similar to how knitting is portable.Yoyos are sewn with small running stitches at the edge of the cotton circular cut-out and gathered tight to make a small flat pouch. The yoyos were then stiched together to make quilts if they were backed with cotton and batting or simply sewn and stitched together to make decorative throws -- similar to the look and feel of crocheted throws. Yoyos were also used as decorative applique to many items during this period. This is a good example of depression era industrial printed cloth and a yoyo throw techique. Items such as these were keepsakes and were often brought to Colorado from the mid-west. HC has one other example of a yoyo "quilt" made in silk with a "round the world" design pattern. The intrinsic value of the above yoyo throw shows typical depression era cotton fabric and design most likely used in everyday life throughout the US and could represent women's activities and thriftines during the Depression in Colorado. This more typical design shows multi-colored printed yoyos combined with a single color fabric yoyos forming square patterns and a border in purple around the edge on all sides. No inscription
