Description
Three ladies of the Evans family are grouped in a late Victorian library interior, and represent three generations of the family. Grouped in the center foreground are Anne Evans, in a white lace dress and seated on an ottoman, and immediately behind her in the damask armchair is her mother, Margaret Gray Evans, in a black dress and holding a book. In the right background, in left profile is an elderly woman, Susan Fulton Gray, mother of Margaret Gray Evans, who is knitting. All three are placed before a large fireplace with elaborately carved mantel on which rest a black clock with ormolu mounts and a variety of oriental ceramics and glass. Bookshelves are at the right background; the Theodore E. Pine portrait of Governor John Evans and below it a large globe are in the left background. A rich decorated oriental carpet underlies the scene. The ottomans (88.508.6 & .7), globe (88.508.3 & .4), portrait and many of the items on the mantel have been donated to the Colorado Historical society by John Evans and members of the Gray family. In pencil on reverse: S.
