Forget Red Cross Sewing In Mad Rush For Knitting: Women Allow Making Of Garments To Slip- Call For Attention To Work.; Forget Red Cross Sewing In Mad Rush For Knitting: Women Allow Making Of Garments To Slip- Call For Attention To Work. Knitting and other lines of work have turned some workers away from the more commonplace and very essential tasks of sewing for the Red Cross, according to department heads of the Spokane chapter. A call has been sounded which it is hoped will serve to return some workers, or interest new women in turning out sewed garments. The army and navy auxiliary is cooperating by suggesting to some of the knitters that they transfer their activitites to sewing until the present crisis is met. The departments hit hardest are the bed shirt departmnet, Mrs. A. C. Toms, chairman, and the bed-jacket department, Mrs. Frank Gibbs, chairman. Auxiliaries, also, are being asked to help. Many of these need more sewing machines and the public is being appealed to for the loan of machines now in storage or unused in homes. These machines will be carefully kept at the different work rooms and returned at any time. The Broadway auxiliary, which meets at the Bryant school, now operates nine machines and needs 15. The Monroe Park auxiliary, meeting at St. Francis hall, has eight and needs four more. Lincoln Heights auxiliary uses five machines in headquarters at the First Congregational church, Twenty-ninth and Freya, but needs three more. West Grove auxiliary needs two. Mrs. W. G. Mc Naughton, Q1711 Tenth avenue, who has turned her house over to war relief work, states that she can accommodate a number of additional women. The home is open for Red Cross work Mondays and Fridays. Shop Is Closed. The Red Cross shop was closed today while the stock was being rearranged, new shelving and showcases installed and the place generally reorganized to catch up on the flood of business which deluged the place last week. "It breaks our hearts to turn these hundreds of customers away from the door today, but we simply had to close up one day while we prepared to handle the amount of business we have received and were not prepared for," said Mrs. Charles H. Jones, manager of the shop. "The special sale we staged Saturday was a perfect success and we find that theory is for clothes-and more clothes. We want people to give us everything that is saleable, but we are especially glad to get articles of apparel. Shoes are in steady demand and boys' and girls' things don't stay on our shelves long. We won't find fault with anything that has been given us, but would say that people who have the time and inclination to put their gifts in clean, attractive conditions before they send them in will be helping our work along greatly." Get Uniform Caps. Ninety-five members of the First Methodist auxiliary have received their uniform caps, which they wear at all meetings. At their last session they turned in 34 sewed bed shirts, 17 sweaters and 27 pairs of socks, according to Mrs. George H. Goble, the chairman. Emergency Met. The popular demand for instructions for making refugee garments for the Red Cross speedily exhuasted the supply sent the local chapter last week. Miss Kate Bond of the Lewis and Clark high school faculty met the situation by having 600 copies, aggregating 1800 pages, made by her pupils, and these copies are now being given out at the Paulsen building headquarters.
