Description
In The Goode Olde Days: Twenty Years Ago: The Lynden Tribune February 3, 1916.; TWENTY YEARS AGO The Lynden Tribune February 3, 1916 In an effort to prevent the spread of measles, Lynden's grammar and primary school will be closed until Monday, February 14, according to an announcement made this morning by Supt. P. A. Wright. The following are Night School students: Walter McSorley, Harry Beernink, Dixon Beernink, Peter Barendse, L. R. Abel, Mr. Cooley, Earl Larson, Pearl Baxter, Harry Cratree, May Crabtree, Grace O'Neil, Mrs. Funk, Abel Dyksterhuis, J. Van Rossum, Gerrit Polinder, John Spaan, Gerrit Zoet, Henry Polinder, Wm. De Vries, Will Warren, Leonard Koole, Fred Cole, Mrs. Jacoby, J. Beringer, Coba Van Soest, Frank Becker, Richard Dreesman, Lucy Austin, Frank Bateman, Everett Hawley, Bert Helder, Mrs. Schutte, Mr. Averill, W. G. Summers R. G. Fail, Herb Fritz, Henry Lindhout, Mr. Feenhouse, Rika Dreesman. A month of snow and freezing weather has passed and Lynden is still burdened with a cold white covering. The spell is the worst in recent years. Huge drifts marked this week's contribution to the siege, cutting off stage service completely and seriously interfering with train schedules. The B. and N. train that left Lynden Tuesday night was held up by drifts at Hampton. An engine that was sent to aid it went off the track and did not get to Bellingham until late Wednesday. Lynden received no mail at all Wednesday. The snow drifted Tuesday night to great depth at some points in town and along the roads. Between the Lynden Department Store and Farmers Mercantile on Fifth Street, the drifts were well over six feet in some places and double that height further up Fifth St. The temperature did not drop below ten during the week, and ranged a couple of points above freezing Wednesday. TEN YEARS AGO The Lynden Tribune February 4, 1926 N. Hansen landed a lively steelhead weighing eighteen pounds, two ounces, this week. Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Serrurier and Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Serrurier left Saturday for California. R. E. Hawley brought in a cluster of green strawberries this week that were ripening in his berry patch. Irwin Le Cocq arrived in Lynden today from South Dakota, and is visiting at the Frank Le Cocq home. The ladies of the Lynden Department Store staff spent Monday evening at the Y. W. C. A. swimming pool in Bellingham. James Richmond from Vanguard, Saskatchewan, Agnes Rodgers from Harmony and Foppe Blysma from Greenwood have entered the Lynden High School. Miss Christine Caza and Lawrence Connell were united in marriage Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Joseph's Church in Lynden. The new directors of the Lynden business and professional men are E. Edson, C. E. Whited, L. J. Brown, W. B. Vander Griend, Conrad Axling, S. T. Jackman, A. A. Bauman, George Taylor and Paul Dolstad. Those having perfect attendance in the first grade for the past month are: George Cobley, Renus Cook, Bennie Crabtree, Gerald Crabtree, Clyde Gilbertson, Floyd Pugh, Billy Renfro, Herman Richenbacher, Don Ross, Edwin Van Dyk, James Rasmussen, Juanita Bodine Lena Brink, Dorothy Francisco, Alberta Hawley, Gertrude Haveman, Lennie Jobe, Frances Deobald, Doris Knittel, Virginia Kauffman, Lula Leake, Edith Meenk, May Nelson, Joyce Olson.
