Description

Religious Fracas For City Council Over Good Friday.; RELIGIOUS FRACAS FOR CITY COUNCIL OVER GOOD FRIDAY. A heated controversy was started in the city council meeting yesterday when Rev. G. A. Peterson, pastor of the Manito Lutheran church, presented the request of the federation committee of the Minsterial association that all stores in Spokane close on Good Friday, April 6, between noon and 3 o'clock, for special religious worship. Mayor Charles Fleming replied that if a holiday were called for any particular religious faith, all other faiths should be entitled to the same consideration. The mayor expressed himself as strongly opposed to the move. On motion of Commissioner Leonard Funk the matter was tabled for one week. After Commissioner Funk had made his motion, the mayor wanted the matter decided at once. The vote was four to one against him. The mayor called on Albert E. Kaye of the Spokane Knitting mills for his views. Mr. Kaye is of the Jewish faith. "If you establish the precedent of a holiday for any religious faith all others should have the same privilege." said Mr. Kaye. Corporation Counsel Geraghty drew the fire of Mayor Fleming When he said the council had no authority to act on such a matter. Commissioner Butler took the view that it would be all right to close the store if the Retail Merchants' association was in favor of the plan.
