Description

In 1959, the United Church Women of Snohomish County organized a thrift shop for families in need on the Tulalip Indian Reservation. Located in the basement of the Tulalip Community Hall, the shop did not require payment from families, and the cigar box used to collect payment was sometimes filled only with I.O.U.s. Any cash that was received went for the purchase of needles, thread and other supplies for the shop. Individuals and organizations in Everett, Stanwood, and Seattle donated clothing, shoes, and household articles, and women from the Tulalip reservation volunteered their time mending donated clothes, sewing quilts, and knitting socks. This photo shows three women working on a sewing project at the store. They are identified from left to right: Rose Elizabeth (Cultee) Fryberg (1915-1995); Christina S. (Fryberg) Williams (1905-1973); and Mrs. Norman Lundeen. According to volunteer organizer Mrs. Lundeen, the store gave away about 400 pounds of clothing per week. Date photograph was filed at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (date of photograph and file date may differ by a month or more): November 28, 1961. Photograph published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on March 25, 1962. Caption information source: Mowrer, L. J. (2013, Winter). History Minute. Hibulb News, 1(4), pp. 3.
