Description

Free Ferries Hurt Roads.; Free Ferries Hurt Roads. The Washington legislature, at the last session, passed an act authorizing the highway director to join with the state of Oregon in operating a free ferry between Astoria and Megler on the Coast highway. The Tacoma Chamber of Commerce objects that that is an opening wedge for the establishment of similar free ferries at other points on the Columbia river, and between the mainland and the islands of Puget sound; that it would create a giant state utility and divert motor vehicle funds from their intended purpose of road construction and maintenance. That would cripple the state highway development program, in the judgment of the Tacoma organization, and result in loss of federal aid, because of inability to match construction funds. Another consideration appears to have been overlooked by the Tacoma chamber—that operation of a free ferry between Megler, Wash., and Astoria, Ore., would draw the trade of southwestern Washington communities to Astoria and Portland and knit that region still more closely to the civic interests of Portland.
