During Past Week Spatial to The Christian Science Monitor NEW YORK—Picking up the lag of the week preceding, sales of heavy apparel featured the retail trade during the past week as the sudden change to cold weather brought out large crowds of buyers for winter merchandise of all kinds, according to the weekly review of Dun & Bradstreet. Fur garments, coats, knitted suits, sweaters, and men's topcoats were in the lead, says the report, with dry goods, blankets, shoes, and dress accessories a close second. There was no abatement in the demand for furniture, and more attention was accorded rugs, lamps, curtains, and draperies. "Radios, jewelry, toiletries, and j drugs moved more into the foreground. Much of the week's enlarged volume was contributed by Halloween novelties, candies, books, sport- i ing goods, hardware and fancy \ I groceries. "Cold weather," says the survey, "which ran the thermometer down to a new October low in some dis- i I tricts, provided the major stimulus I to the rise of 5 to 8 per cent in retail sales from the preceding week's. With this gain, the estimated retail volume for the country, as a whole, broadened to 12 to 18 per cent over that recorded for the corresponding 1935 week. "The improvement was especially marked in the New England states where last year's total was passed by 15 to 20 per cent. There also was substantial recovery in the East particularly in the distribution o heavy apparel, as sales were ahead of a year ago by 10 to 18 per cent. "Rapid expansion of schedules a some of the industrial centers o the Middle West widened the av erage of retail sales to 16 to 22 pe cent over the 1935 week," continue the report. "With large buying o winter needs, volume for the North west was up 20 to 25 per cent from last year's. "The unchecked improvement in the south extended the previou advantage to 20 to 30 per cent There was a moderate recession in the Southwest, which narrowed th increase over last year to 18 to 20 per cent. Closing October with a stronger consumer demand than ex pected, the Pacific coast was above its 1935 sales by 15 to 27 per cent. "Widened retail distribution, especially in agricultural areas, wher good crop prices prevailed, adde to the impetus of wholesale activity The increase for the week was small but the volume averaged approxi mately 20 per cent larger than fo the corresponding 1935 period. Delays ranging from one to three months in receiving merchandise I from manufacturers hampered the1 operations of many wholesalers the further shortening of stocks creating a sellers' market at some of the leading cities."
