In 1959, the United Church Women of Snohomish County organized a thrift shop for families in need on the Tulalip Indian Reservation. Located in the basement of the Tulalip Community Hall, the shop had a cigar box for payment, but often the box was filled only with I.O.U.s. Any cash that was received went for the purchase of needles, thread and other supplies for the shop. Individuals and organizations in Everett, Stanwood, and Seattle donated clothing, shoes, and household articles, and women from the Tulalip Reservation volunteered their time mending donated clothes, sewing quilts, and knitting socks. This photo shows two women working on sewing projects at the store. Lillian R. (Charles) Jones (1911-1985), left, does hand work while Rilla Minerva (Pratt) Shelton (1914-1973) works on a quilt.
