Women At State "Pen" Are Given Homelike Quarters.; Women at State "Pen" Are Given Homelike Quarters The new women's annex at the state penitentiary is part of the women's quarters, outside the east wall in the rear of the warden's residence. It is entirely separate from the men's quarters. The institution is described in the March issue of Agenda. The building is fireproof, being of all-steel construction with cement flooring throughout and plastered walls. Electricity furnishes the light, steam heat, hot water and fan ventilation. Aside from the upkeep of the department, the girls engage in small lucrative employment, making articles for sale, such as embroideries, art work, beads, painting, crocheting, hemstitching, pillows, dressed dolls, aprons and laundry bags. They are being supervised in rug-making, using remnants from the tailor shop. No. 13,113 takes on eon a personally conducted tour. She writes From the hall we enter into the prison proper. The inmates' dining room, of ample size, occupies the center, with its eight casement windows that reveal a court beyond, laid out in lawn, shrubbery and flowers, presenting the appearance of an old-fashioned garden, sheltered from north winds by a 20-foot wall. Opening directly from the dining room is a practical kitchen with cross-ventilation, adequate cupboard and storage space, and four large windows about a double-tray sink, facing the court. An entrance from the kitchen into a stair-hall gives quick access to the basement, where a specific room is set apart for the housing and storing of all foodstuffs. To the right and left on the first floor, leading off the stair-halls, are two wings, A and B. Each wing includes a day room of attractive proportions,consistently furnished; a linen closet, bathroom and 15 inmates' rooms, each with a wall cabinet, mirror, lavatory and stool. The furnishings are regulative - bed, table, dresser, chair, garment hanger and foot rug. Directly over the dining room on the second floor is the auditorium with wide casement windows well lighting the room. At one end space and design are given over to the future installation of a motion picture screen and machine room. There is an adequate supply of folding steel chairs here, for use whenever services of any kind are held. To the right and left are wings C and D - replicas of wings A and B in appointment. D wing serves in the capacity of a "treatment" ward, the occupants of which are under direct medical supervision. Segregation is maintained in so far as possible. At the head of the stairs we enter the hospital ward, occupying the front over the matrons' quarters. When equipped this department will be complete. The nurse's quarters are located between the diet kitchen and the five rooms for patients. A sterilizing and equipment room of generous size joins the operating room. Convenient arrangement for an anaesthetizing and preparation of operator are included in the plan. A dental office is another feature.
