Description

Walla Walla Pen Will Make Shoes.; WALLA WALLA PEN WILL MAKE SHOES OLYMPIA, Wash., July 22. - All shoes needed by wards of the state of Washington will in the future be manufactured by prisoners in the state penitentiary at Walla Walla, according to J. W. Pace, assistant director of the state department of business control. As the penitentiary jute mill has been losing money, it probably will be closed and a shoe manufacturing plant installed. It is expected the prisoners will manufacture 12,000 pairs of shoes annually. Women prisoners in the state institution will operate knitting machines and turn out 20,000 pairs of cotton socks a year, according to present plans.
