Description

In 1959, the United Church Women of Snohomish County organized a thrift shop for families in need on the Tulalip Indian Reservation. Located in the basement of the Tulalip Community Hall, the shop had a cigar box for payment, but often the box was filled only with I.O.U.s. Any cash that was received went for the purchase of needles, thread and other supplies for the shop. Individuals and organizations in Everett, Stanwood, and Seattle donated clothing, shoes, and household articles, and women from the Tulalip Reservation volunteered their time mending donated clothes, sewing quilts, and knitting socks. This photo shows two women holding handmade crafts they made to sell at the shop. Cecilia (Jackson) Jones (1898-1982), left, holds dolls woven from swamp cattails, sweet grass, and raffia, while Christina S. (Fryberg) Williams (1905-1973) holds a small wooden totem. Date photograph was filed at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (date of photograph and file date may differ by a month or more): November 28, 1961. Photograph published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on March 25, 1962. Caption information source: Mowrer, L. J. (2013, Winter). History Minute. Hibulb News, 1(4), pp. 3.
