Description
My husband Charles was scheduled for long-overdue knee replacement surgery. I needed a small, relatively simple project to work on while we were at the hospital during both his knee replacement surgeries and recovery. A knitted doily seemed the perfect project.
The pattern was from a book called Winter Gift for Ladies, by an American Lady, published in 1848. The projects in the book were not illustrated. The author trusted the reader to know how to choose appropriate thread and needles for the doily, writing “For this knitting, your cotton and needles should be rather fine.” Further details about the book are below.
I used knitting needles size 1 (US), and “18th Century” Mercerized Crochet and Bedspread Cotton (Pre-Shrunk * AAA Quality), by Lily Belding Company, Shelby, North Carolina. The thread had been in my yarn collection for a long time.
The doily and both new knees turned out satisfactorily.
“D’Oyleys,” in A Winter Gift for Ladies: Being Instructions in Knitting, Netting, and Crotchet [sic] Work, by An American Lady, G. B. Zieber & Co., 1848, page 27.
In 2025, a person could download the book from Antique Pattern Library:
