Knitting needles used by Leila Nance Moffatt in Thomas Wolfe's "The Return of Buck Gavin," produced at the University of North Carolina in 1919. Needles are 23 cm long; strip of knitting is 8 cm wide, 6 cm diameter when wrapped around needles.

Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938) is considered by many to be North Carolina's greatest literary talent. A native of Asheville, NC, Wolfe earned his Bachelor of Arts at UNC, where he served as editor of the college newspaper and playwright for the Carolina Playmakers. He went on to earn a Master’s degree at Harvard and publish the famous autobiographical novels Look Homeward Angel in 1929 and Of Time and the River in 1935.
