Outskirts of Luliang, Yunnan Province - 1944
Shown is a hut made of mud brick and tile. The children outside curiously look at the Americans passing by. Note the wall to the right that is dilapidated and tiles broken off. This is the remains of a compound wall that was always part of the family housing structure. The water buffalo was a common sight. They were used for all types of work. The piles in the foreground are the night soils collected over the year. They are mixed with water and used as fertilizer . The girl in the right foreground carries a younger sister. The boys are dressed in a variety of Chinese clothing from cloth caps and knitted caps to military caps. On the far right an ox cart made of wood is used as a container to carry the soil to the fields.
