Photographic portrait of a group of eight school children in China, ca.1900. Seven of the children are shown at center, most of them wearing long, quilted coats and knit caps. Most of the children are smiling. A much taller adolescent is partially visible to the left wringing his hands at his throat, his feet bare. Grass is visible in the foreground. The backdrop is a wall that appears to be made of concrete. A previous record reads "It is winter and the school is out. The children are pleased to have their picture taken".
