Description

“Gifts to leprosy patients.” Group portrait of nurses and leprosy patients two of whom hold bundles of sweaters and scarves. Some of the nurses had knitted pullovers for the leper patients and a ceremony was conducted by Sister Burt when they were given out. Chogoria had a dedicated leper’s ward, funded by the Mission to Lepers, which was situated on a spur of land called Gatheru. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1928-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established in 1922.
