THE INAUGURATION OF ALBERT J. DIULIO, 5.J. as the Twenty-first President of MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY TWENTY-SIXTH DAY OF OCTOBER NINETEEN HUNDRED NINETY ARQUETTE UNIVERSITY has been a center of dynamic interaction between faculty and students in the pursuit and discovery of knowledge for nearly 110 years. This interaction has occurred within the rich tradition of the University's Jesuit, Catholic, and independent heritage. In executing its mission as an institution of higher learning, dedicated to undergraduate, graduate and professional education, Marquette is committed to intellectual and spiritual excellence. These commitments are not new. The idea of Marquette University had its origins in a call to the Society of Jesus to serve the Milwaukee community. The Most Reverend John Martin Henni, first Catholic bishop of Milwaukee, asked the Jesuits to establish Catholic higher education in his city, and, in 1848, secured a modest amount of money to help the order to form a college. The first Jesuits came to Milwaukee in 1849 and established a permanent residence in 1857. St. Aloysius Academy, the Jesuit's initial educational endeavor, lasted only two years. However, the Jesuits, with the continued support of Bishop Henni, persisted in their efforts to establish Jesuit higher education here. Significant progress was made when Rev. Stanislaus Lalumiere, S.J., who later would become Marquette College's fourth President, added high school courses to his parish school in 1864, calling it St. Gall's Academy. In that same year, the Wisconsin legislature issued a charter which authorized the establishment of Marquette College. It was not surprising that those planning the new college chose for its namesake Pere Jacques Marquette. Born in Laon, France, on June I, 1637, the Jesuit missionary became one of the world's most renowned explorers as a discoverer of the Mississippi River. Young Jacques desired from an early age to be a missionary in the service of Jesus Christ. Educated by the Jesuits, he entered the order in 1654 and was ordained a priest in 1666. Marquette College, operated by a staff of seven Jesuits, opened in September 1881. By the end of that year, a total of 77 students were enrolled. The first graduation was held in 1887, with five students receiving Bachelor of Arts degrees. Marquette achieved university status in 1907. Today, Marquette University has a full- and part-time faculty of nearly 1,000, supported by an equal number of administrators and staff, and a student enrollment of nearly 12,000. More than 100,000 degrees have been awarded by Marquette during its 109 years. Much of the growth that the University has experienced through the years was made possible by the generous support of thousands of alumni, and othedriends. CADEMIC EXCELLENCE, centered in the liberal arts and based on true scholarship, is at the heart of the University and its 12 colleges, schools and programs--the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Nursing, and Communication, Journalism and Performing Arts, the schools of Dentistry, Education, Graduate Studies and Law, and the programs in Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Physical Therapy. Marquette faculty challenge its students to pursue excellence in their academic, social and spiritual lives. That the faculty lead by example is evidenced by their many accomplishments and honors. Within the context of a university guided by Jesuit and Catholic principles, Marquette faculty have forged leadership roles in the humanities, business, communication, social sciences, engineering, legal studies, sciences, religious affairs and health fields. The number of Fulbright awards, research grants, books attracting national attention, learned journal publications, recognition as excellent teachers, and other indicators of scholarly excellence earned by Marquette faculty have increased dramatically in the last three decades. The same thirst for exploration and discovery that motivated Pere Marquette is exemplified by the University's faculty today. Undergraduate, graduate and professional school students also have excelled in scholarly pursuits, winning national academic competitions, and their quest for knowledge beyond their days at the University. HE VALDES AND IDEALS that are the foundations of Marquette University are reflected in more than just the classroom and laboratory. From residence life to participation in athletics, students are helped by Jesuits and lay collaborators to focus on spiritual and intellectual formation. Through such outreach programs as the Marquette University Community Action Program and professional service projects, many students demonstrate their understanding and acceptance of the call to community service. This year, spiritual enrichment will be a special focus of the Marquette community as it participates in the world-wide celebration of the Ignatian Year. The Jesuits, their co-workers, students, alumni, parishioners, and supporters from the University and other Jesuit-sponsored communities in Greater Milwaukee are seeking to renew interest and involvement in the Christian spirituality of St. Ignatius, as represented in his Spiritual Exercises. The Ignatian Year began September 27, 1990, on the 4S0th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Jesus. It will end on July 31, 1991, the SOOth anniversary of the birth of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the society. in developing appropriate higher education policies and plans; in relating to many university constituencies--both internal and external--and in attracting the critical resources necessary to maintain and enhance top-flight undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. And, of course, he has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the Jesuit mission in higher education." Father DiUlio needs no introduction to Marquette since he has numerous ties with the University. The many alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends who knew him during his earlier associations with Marquette welcomed his return with enthusiasm. He is a Marquette alumnus who received a bachelor's degree in business and economics in 1965 and a master's degree in economics in 1969. As an administrator, he served the University as an Assistant Dean of the College of Arts the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (Chairman of the Council of Presidents); and the President's Commission of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Father DiUlio is a member of the Boards of Trustees at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, Marquette University High School, Milwaukee, and St. Xavier High School, Cincinnati. In addition, he is a member of the International Association of University Presidents, North American Council; American Finance Association; Academy of Management, and American Association of Higher Education. His mother, Mrs. Louise Bradle DiUlio, and his sister, Maria, reside in Laona. Mrs. DiUlio taught English for 40 years in the Laona public school before retiring. His brother and sister-in-law, Drs. Robert A. and Lynn Knitter DiUlio, reside in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. Anderson, Ph.D., Member HE traditions surrounding academic ceremonies, such as inaugurations and commencements, are rooted in the customs lL:~::~=~~ of the Middle Ages when universities were first formed. Gowns and mortar boards, for example, were a common form of dress during that era. Toda)T, graduates wear colorful academic apparel, signifying their alma maters and highest degrees received. This academic garb and other similar symbols in evidence at todays ceremony reflect the continuity and strength of higher education in our culture. Three particular symbols, important to Marquette University, are its seal, its presidential chain of office, and its mace. THE MARQUETTE SEAL MARQUETTE'S SEAL shows, in the upper portion, two wolves dancing around a kettle, and diagonal stripes or bars which are taken from the coat of arms of the family of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. The Latin inscription Numen Flumenque, loosely translated, means "God and the River." Just as Pere Jacques Marquette, S.J., brought knowledge of God to Native Americans living along the Mississippi River, so also did he bring knowledge of the great river to the Christian world. The lower portion of the seal depicts Father Marquette, accompanied by an Indian friend, on one of his many missionary journeys. Marquette's seal is an integral part of both the presidential chain of office and the mace. THE MARQUETTE CHAIN OF OFFICE THE TRADITION OF A CHAIN OF OFFICE goes back to the colorful life of the integrated town-community in the Middle Ages. Temporal symbol of communal harmony was the mayor, who at his investiture, was given a chain with medallions that represented all of the guilds working together for the welfare of the town. In the medieval university, the chief official- or rector magnificus - held authority similar to that of the mayor in civil society. Thus, he, too, was honored with a chain of office, but his consisted of insignia of all of the colleges of his university. Marquette's presidential chain of office was presented on December 16, 1953, to Rev. Edward J. O'Donnell, S.J., then Marquette President, by four professors who had found refuge at the University after being exiled from their Communist homelands. The chain includes 21 bronze links and is crowned by a gold medallion which bears the likenesses of the Jesuit saints, Ignatius Loyola and Francis Xavier. The Marquette seal, the symbol of the Blessed Trinity, and insignia of the University's schools and colleges form the other links. 13 THE MARQUETTE MACE I.!:::========!JACES were war clubs used during the Middle Ages as weapons of last resort by military officers. In the university, the mace became a traditional symbol of protection and later evolved into use as a longer, walking stick. The mace bearer is traditionally the university's senior faculty member and, at Marquette, that honor goes to Dr. Arthur C. Moeller, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Marquette's mace, made of mahogany and topped with a gold-plated replica of the University seal, makes its first appearance at today's inaugural and will be part of all future Marquette commence­ments and other formal academic celebrations.
