Description
Interior view of the refectory of the Pantocrator Monastery. The frescos in the arches (from left to right) depict the Dormition of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary), Mystical Supper (or Last Supper), and Christ's Transfiguration (Metamorphosis). Across the spandrels of the central arch the angel Gabriel greets the Theotokos in a representation of the Annunciation. Christ praying in Gethsemane can be identified on the top left, and other saints fill the rest of the space. The refectory is located on the second floor of the west wing opposite the catholicon or communal church. It was renovated in 1744, and was painted in 1749 by a group of three artists from Ioannina: Seraphim, Kosmas, and Ioannikios. The monastery of Pantocrator was recognized as a monastery in the mid-14th century. Before then it was a loosely knit center of kelli (‘cells’ or monastic living quarters).
