Description
“Sister bought wool & asked for volunteers to knit pull-overs for the leprosy patients (L.) Here they are being given out.” Group portrait of nurses and patients outside the leper ward. Some of the nurses had knitted pullovers for the leper patients and a ceremony was conducted by Sister Margaret Burt when they were given out. Chogoria had a dedicated leper’s ward, funded by the Mission to Lepers, which was situated on a spur of land called Gatheru. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1947-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established near Mt Kenya, in 1922, and run by Dr Irvine.
