Description

This is a decorative mini-lei made up of crocheted flowers. The flowers are designed to evoke the maʻo hau hele, the yellow native hibiscus which is the state flower of Hawaii.

I designed & made this item in spring 2022. It is made from size 10 crochet thread (Willow Veil brand, color cherry red) and size 8 perle cotton (Anchor brand, color 290), crocheted with a size 8 steel crochet hook.

I made this item as part of my ongoing series of crocheted state flowers. I had been making small sample flowers, playing with colors & forms, but aiming for a stylistic rather than realistic version of the hibiscus. After I had made several, I thought it would be fun to turn these small flowers into a decorative mini-lei in time for Lei Day (which is May 1 & a state holiday in Hawaii).

I will add that I have never seen the maʻo hau hele, though I am familiar with other flowers in the hibiscus genus. I have made do with photos & the colors of thread I had on hand -- another reason these little ones may not be regarded as realistic.
