Sewn Clothes for Ginny Doll

In 1954, I received a Christmas gift from my Grandma Myrtle, a Ginny doll, which all these years later still means so much to me! She represents three generations of creators. My Grandma, who sewed and tatted, made the tiny wardrobe from swatches of fabric provided by my Mother. The swatches came from clothes my Mother, a seamstress, made for me. Around 2000, I added clothes to Ginny’s wardrobe with crochet. I have about 20 handmade outfits for my doll. Those I have chosen to photograph are great examples of the tiny exquisite embellishments my grandmother added to each piece: paper flowers, French knot bouquet; lace edging with lacy pompom. Lace flower with French knots. Interestingly, the pink dress is made of Pongee fabric: I remember this because I would say things like, “I’m going to wear the pink pongee” ”Pongee is a lightweight & plain weave fabric made from silk or a blend of silk & synthetic fibers. It is known for its soft texture and smooth finish.
