Porcelain bisque shoulder head doll has reddish-brown mohair wig fashioned in the style associated with Charles Dana Gibson's drawings of women. Wig is glued to a cork pate. Brows and lashes are painted light brown, inset glass eyes are brown, nostrils delineated, and cheeks and lips are coral. Head has long neck and molded ears. Dress is sewn closed and close examination of the limbs is difficult, but upper and lower arms are both bisque, jointed at the elbow and attached near the shoulder to a kid body. Nails are outlined in pink Thighs and calves are separate kid pieces, hinged with metal pins. Doll wears a circa 1895 white cotton lawn tea dress. Dress has a high neckline, leg'o mutton sleeves over a fitted lower sleeve that ends in ruffles, and a deep ruffle encircling the shoulder. Bodice has vertical pin tucks on each side of a lace insert. Skirt is fitted to above the knee and has two vertical rows of inset lace both front and back. The bottom of the skirt is very full, gathered, and has a net lace ruffle at the seam and around the hem. The lower skirt also has a lace inset above two rows of tucks. A modified bustle is attached to the back waist. Dress has a white satin ribbon belt tied in a bow at the right side. The doll's slip and drawers are sewn to the skirt at about thigh level. Slip has eyelet embroidery trim. Drawers have three pin tucks at the knee and a narrow lace ruffle trim. Stockings are blue and white horizontal stripe knit. Shoes are black leather with brown leather soles, silver buckle at instep, and fasten with embroidery floss ties at the ankle. The tea dress and undergarments may be original to the doll, but were probably not factory made.
