Description
Came to Billings and worked for Yegen Brothers Bakery in 1884. Peter Peroe (sometimes spelled Peros) married Emilie Elizabeth Steingruber at Hebron, N. D., in 1893 (she was 14 years younger). Established his own bakery, which was destroyed in a large fire, and a Fruits and Confectionery business at 2603 Montana Avenue. President of the Billings Opera house in 1890s. He is knitting in this photo. Yellowstone County, Montana, in the world war, 1917-1918-1919 identifies him as 'Champion masculine Red Cross knitter.' (p 201) and he had 2427 hours of knitting (p 174). Peter Peroe died in May, 1944 - See Pioneer Billings Resident Dies, Billings Gazette, May 18, 1944. Survived in 1944 by son, Robert George Peroe, and daughter Mrs. Alfred (Jennie) Bartz. Lived at 311 North Twenty-seventh street. Emily alive in 1954. The Western Heritage Center has many photos of this family--but very few identifications.
