Portrait image of Mary Slessor (1848-1915), seated in a garden knitting. Knitting was a favouite pastime of Mary's in difficult times.; Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary known for her work in Africa and for promoting women's rights. At the age of 27 she became a missionary in Calabar where she successfully fought against a number of issues including the killing of twins at infancy. Mary died in Calabar at the age of 67 and was given a state burial.
