The cedars, tall desolute had fallen asleep on the plains of Judea; the palms hushed their rhythmic clapping along the desert lanes. The chilly wind took up the sequel of the watching pines that had reveled, in prophesy and pageantry; the dew sent up its silken skeins to knit into the fog tender vapors of lace that, veiled the face of one bright traveling star. The nightbirds had ceased their twilight praise and all was calm in the city of Bethlehem. Around warming fires were ruddy faces beaming in comfort and security. Good night kisses had been pressed on the brow of early sleeping, loved ones and the lower lights in, softer flames flickered about the lampglobe.
